04/28/2009 - At 6-foot-2 and 256 pounds, Brown is a bit undersized for a 4-3 defensive end but he possesses excellent speed and strength. At the NFL Scouting Combine he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.73 seconds and bench-pressed 225 pounds 26 times. He's been compared to Indianapolis Colts defensive end Robert Mathis. Of course, Mathis played for new Panthers defensive coordinator Ron Meeks. Brown comes to Carolina with a reputation for being a high-motor guy. "With my effort and the passion I play the game with, it speaks for itself," Brown said. "I feel like I can't be denied and I'm going to play 110 percent and play 110 miles per hour every play, full speed."

04/28/2009 - A closer look at the Panthers' picks: Round 2/43 -- Everette Brown, DE, 6-2, 256, Florida State...The Panthers wanted him so badly they traded next year's first-round pick to San Francisco in order to get him at No. 43. (The Panthers also picked up a fourth-round pick this year). He provides a long-term replacement for Julius Peppers, who has said he wants out of Carolina but is the team's franchise player. The Panthers believe Brown will pep up their pass rush.

      Overview

The two-year starter emerged as one of the elite pass rushers in the collegiate ranks as a junior. With National Football League teams putting much more emphasis on speedy edge rushers, Brown felt it was the right time to forgo his senior season and applied for the 2009 NFL Draft. With his athletic ability and quickness off the snap, the only question NFL teams have about Brown is where to play him.

Teams that utilize the 3-4 alignment feel Brown can make a successful move to strong-side outside linebacker, comparing him to Dallas' DeMarcus Ware, an undersized former college defensive end who has had great success after moving to linebacker. Other teams feel that his pass rush burst off the snap might be a better fit to play rush end, where he has been likened to Indianapolis' Robert Mathis.

In 25 starting assignments, the right defensive end registered 23 sacks, tying for fifth on the school career record list. He is just the fifth player in Seminoles history to record more than 40 stops behind the line of scrimmage (46.5), moving ahead of Hall of Fame nose guard Ron Simmons (44, 1977-80) for second on the FSU all-time record list behind Darnell Dockett (65, 2000-03). Most of those totals came during his 2008 campaign, as his 13.5 sacks and 21.5 stops for loss both rank third on the school single-season record list.

Brown also became one of Florida State's leaders when it comes to community service, donating his time freely. Brown has volunteered at Riley Elementary and Speight Middle School, with booster groups, The Able Trust, MDA Summer Camp and the Tallahassee Seminole Club. He has also contributed his time to the Dick Howser Center for Childhood Services, Life Skills Center and Read Across America, among many others.

At Beddingfield High School, Brown was rated a four-star prospect, the third-best weak-side defensive end and 78th-ranked overall player in the country by Rivals.com. He was rated the fifth-best player in North Carolina and the state's premier defensive lineman by Super Prep.

As a senior, Brown recorded 120 tackles with 16 sacks. He also excelled as a tight end, coming up with 40 receptions for 770 yards (19.25 avg) and 10 touchdowns. After his final campaign, he played in the Shrine Bowl All-Star game. A heavy recruiting battle ensued, but Florida State emerged as the victors over North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Georgia and North Carolina State for Brown's services.

The freshman appeared in two games, but did not record any tackles in 2005 before the staff decided to grant him a redshirt. The following season, he played in 13 games, starting three contests. He finished ninth on the team with 27 tackles (16 solos), posting three sacks while ranking second on the squad with 13.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage. He also blocked a kick, earning Freshman All-American honors from The Sporting News.

Brown started eight games at left defensive end and one more on the right side in 2006. He led the Seminoles with 6.5 sacks and placed second on the squad with 11.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He also made 37 tackles (24 solos) while deflecting three passes.

In 2008, Brown was stationed at right defensive end, where he led the Atlantic Coast Conference and finished third in the nation with 13.5 sacks, tying for third on the school single-season record list. The All-American second-team pick and ACC Player of the Year runner-up was also a finalist for the Ted Hendricks Award, given to the nation's premier defensive end. His 21.5 stops for loss ranked fourth nationally and also ranked third on FSU's annual record chart. He caused four fumbles and totaled 36 hits (30 solos) in 13 starts.

      Scouting Report

      GENERAL REPORT: GRADE: 7.18

Body Structure: Brown has a well-built, muscular frame with a tight waist and hips, long arms, thick thighs and room on his frame for additional growth, if he is to stay at defensive end.

Athletic Ability: Brown has the sudden burst and straight-line speed to be an impact edge rusher at the next level, but seems to have hip stiffness, looking sluggish when having to change direction and work down the line (see 20-yard shuttle/three cone times), which could make a move to linebacker difficult, as he will need to drop back in pass coverage often and does not seem to have the ability to do so. He runs easily into the backfield and is quick to accelerate when he sees a chance to get to the quarterback. He is an explosive athlete who has all tools you look for in an edge rusher (excellent speed, sudden burst). He generates an explosive first step and is very active using his hands to defeat the bigger blockers with good cross over action. He lacks fluid hip flexibility and movement coming off the snap, but has good strength and knee bend. He does tend to get a bit high in his stance when on the move. He is effective extending his long arms to keep blockers off his chest. GRADE: 7.5

Football Sense: Brown has a good feel for backfield movement and is quick to react to plays in front of him. He is the type that can take what he has learned from the playbook and use it on the field. He is a smart, instinctive player who does everything the coaches ask and more. He is reliable, works hard in the weight room and is a self-starter. He does get a bit reckless in his play, leading to a few penalties and needs to do a better job of anticipating the snap cadence. GRADE: 6.7

Character: Brown is a class act, both on and off the field. He has no known off-field issues and is heavily involved in a lot of community, school and charity work. GRADE: 7.5

Competitiveness: Brown is a hard-nose player who has this good "seek and destroy" attitude when it comes to attacking the backfield. He is as feisty as he is nasty, taking on blockers who far out-weigh him, but still will not back down from a battle in the trenches. Even though he has just adequate upper body power, he plays with high intensity and his motor is always running. He may be undersized for the defensive end position, but he has learned to compensate with his foot speed and ability to use his long arms to keep blockers off his body. Even when he gets knocked around by the larger blockers, he refuses to give up on the play. His burst to the ball shows the urgency in his play. GRADE: 7.4

Work Habits: Brown is a self-starter and leader by example. He lacks ideal bulk, but shows an array of moves to outsmart the bigger blockers. He needs to improve his upper body strength, but even though he might be a better fit at defensive end than linebacker, due to marginal hip snap and change of direction agility, his frame might be near maximum growth potential. GRADE: 6.8

      ATHLETIC REPORT: GRADE: 7.38

Explosion/Pursuit: Brown has sudden quickness off the ball and does a very good job of getting on the edge and keeping advantage. He is sudden coming out of his stance and has a good feel for knowing when to burst. He has above average instincts coming off the snap, having the ability needed to fly past offensive tackles coming off the edge. He shows no hesitation getting to top speed when moving upfield. Even when he gets engulfed by the larger blockers, he will fight hard to escape and has the hand usage to get the offensive tackles up on their heels and off-balanced. GRADE: 8.3

Strength at Point: Brown has good, but not great field strength to consistently split tackle. He shows very good ability to knife through the gaps. He just lacks the body mass and brute upper body strength. He has just adequate hip roll, but plays with leverage when he uses his hands to work the blocker (keeps his arms extended and can squeeze the lane). He struggles to disengage when working in-line, but has the speed to defeat tackles coming off the edge. He plays stout, but when working around the pile he does not have the bulk to prevent the bigger blockers from absorbing him. Even with his strength and long arms, if a blocker gets into his chest, Brown will fail to shed (has good crossover moves, but has to get the blocker up on their heels to be effective). GRADE: 6.1

Use of Hands: Brown has very good natural hand usage, as he constantly keeps working a blocker and because of this, he is able to compete vs. bigger opponents with leverage, combined with his quick feet and hands. His pad level can get high at times, but he has a very good punch and extension to defeat the blocks. He uses his hands well with good placement, but does struggle to shed and escape at times, especially when working in-line. He has very good rip and pull moves and is very active with his hands when attempting to separate vs. the blockers on running plays. GRADE: 8.0

Lateral Pursuit/Effort: Brown has just adequate lateral agility, as he tends to be high in slants and at times gets washed out when a blocker is able to lock on. He has the functional lateral range to avoid blockers, but just seems to struggle when he has to suddenly redirect or drop back in pass coverage (usually taken out on obvious pass plays). He has outstanding closing speed to chase and move through traffic. He plays with very good effort, especially when closing from the back side. GRADE: 5.7

Tackling Ability: Brown is a physical back-side tackler with enough strength to jolt on contact. He shows solid wrap-up tackling technique and drives hard into the ball carrier, rarely softening in his approach. He plays with great intensity and does not want the ballcarrier or quarterback to get away. He has enough agility needed to adjust and finish the play when working in space, but appears to be too stiff in his hips for a possible move to the linebacking unit. GRADE: 7.9

Run Defense: Brown shows strength to hold his ground, but is better working off the edge, as he struggles at times vs. blockers lined up over his head. He plays with good leverage, but will struggle at the point of attack, as he lacks the bulk and lower leg drive to prevent the much bigger blockers from pushing him back. His excellent speed helps him string plays wide and he does play with good leverage. GRADE: 6.3

Pass Rush: Brown comes off the snap with a sudden first step. He shows very good dip and body lean on the edge and has the burst to get by a lethargic blocker in an instant. He is very active using his hands and is constantly running his feet. His spin move is very fluid and he can squeeze through tight areas, but must do a better job of protecting his feet from low blocks. His knee bend allows him to redirect and dip under blocks in his back side pursuit. His best asset is when he comes off the edge to collapse the pocket. His quickness allows him to run past offensive tackles to make the play behind the line of scrimmage. GRADE: 8.8

Closing on the QB: This is where Brown's closing speed comes into play, as he shows a good burst and an array of finishing moves. He does not hesitate in his pursuit of the quarterback (some call him relentless) and he has a great short-area burst to close coming off the edge. His lateral agility is adequate, but he quickly works down the line of scrimmage. The strange thing is his lack of QB pressures, though. GRADE: 7.8

Instincts/Recognition: Brown is an explosive athlete with good tools and skills to be an elite NFL edge rusher. He might be limited playing every down in the NFL due to size limitations, but he has the speed and ball recognition skills that might see him perform much better on the edge than as an outside linebacker. He is quick to locate and track the ball and has the burst needed to quickly reach the play. He is a smart player who won't bite on misdirection or play-action and if he does, he won't make the same mistake twice. GRADE: 7.5

Compares To: JOHN ABRAHAM, Atlanta -- Brown is not as big as Abraham, unless a Florida State coach handles the measurements (school listed him close to three inches taller than he actually is), but both are elite pass rushers in an age where teams put great emphasis on explosive edge rushers wreaking havoc in the backfield. Some compare Brown to Dallas' DeMarcus Ware, but he does not have the fluid hips to drop back in pass coverage, making it a potential unwise move to plant him in the linebacking unit. History says that Florida State defensive ends rarely excel in the pros, but if used in the right system like Indianapolis utilizes with Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, Brown could be the one to break the Seminoles' jinx.

      OVERALL GRADE-7.35

Colorado … Florida State tailback Antone Smith pitched in with 154 yards and three touchdowns to give FSU and head coach Bobby Bowden a 39-21 win over Colorado, the 500th game, and 376th victory, of Bowden's legendary career … Brown had an impact on the game's outcome as well, finishing with three solo tackles, including a sack, a tackle for loss, a forced fumble, and a QB pressure … On Colorado's first offensive series of the game, Brown tackled quarterback Cody Hawkins for a 2-yard loss on third down, causing the signal-caller to lose his handle on the ball, which was recovered by FSU defensive end Neefy Moffett at the Colorado 27-yard line. The turnover resulted in Florida State's first touchdown of the game, a 2-yard run by tailback Antone Smith, giving FSU a 7-0 lead … Said Moffet of his fellow defensive end, "We've got the best end in the country in Everette Brown" … Near the end of the first half, Brown was credited with tackling Buff tailback Rodney Stewart after a 1-yard gain and, on a subsequent drive, sacking Cody Hawkins for a 7-yard loss … On a drive that began early in the fourth quarter, the FSU defensive end was flagged 15 yards for roughing the passer, which placed the ball at Florida State's 40-yard line. Miami … Florida State running back Antone Smith continued his ground assault, racking up 92 yards and a career-high four touchdowns, including a game-clinching score with 3:57 left in the game, in the Seminoles' 41-39 thriller over Miami … Brown chipped in with two pass deflections for a defense that held Miami to just 256 total yards … During the Hurricanes' first offensive series of the second half, Brown got his hands up to deflect Miami quarterback Robert Marve's third-down toss to wide receiver Leonard Hankerson, forcing the Hurricanes to punt the ball away … At the 9:03 mark in the fourth quarter, Marve tried to connect with wideout Travis Benjamin on third down at the FSU 7-yard line, but Brown was able to knock down the pass, forcing the Hurricanes to settle for 24-yard field goal … Head-to-Head Competition: OT#64-Jason Fox (6:07-306)-5-yard touchdown run.

North Carolina State … Everett Brown had a quiet performance in Florida State's 26-17 victory over the N.C. State Wolfpack, registering just one tackle for loss … Early in the fourth quarter, Brown and a teammate dropped tailback Andre Brown for a 1-yard loss inside N.C. State's 20-yard line … Head-to-Head Competition: OT#70-Jake Vermiglio (6:05-315)-One false start.

Virginia Tech … Brown was an absolute pass-rushing terror in the Seminoles' 30-20 victory over Virginia Tech, finishing the contest with five solo tackles, including four tackles for losses and three sacks … Said Brown after the game, "I feel like there was a lot of adrenaline out there. It was a great victory tonight, glad to come out victorious. Just looking back on the game what I can think of right now is our d-line did a great job tonight closing in the pocket and creating pressure that allowed me more one-on-one blocks. I was able to take advantage of the opportunity and create havoc all night, which is what I'm supposed to do as a defensive end. That was the most one-on-one blocking I've faced all year, and Virginia Tech did a lot of things to try to prevent it without double-teaming me so they could use all their guys on offense. I played three quarter-backs and that was tough adjusting to them because you didn't game plan for three different quarterbacks. But we were able to stay together and be victorious. With [Sean] Glennon coming in, we knew he was an experienced guy, he was more of a pocket passer. So we were able to get more pressure on him and we could blitz more. And after Glennon went down, Cory Holt, who we haven't seen on film, we had to watch out for trick plays and reverses. We just did a great job executing on defense and staying with our game plan" … During an early second-quarter drive, Brown twice sacked Hokie quarterback Sean Glennon, for losses for 3 and 6 yards, respectively … Later in the second quarter, Brown registered his third sack of the game when he brought down Glennon at the Florida State 30-yard line for a 2-yard loss … Early in the third stanza, the FSU defensive end tackled VT tailback Darren Evans after a 2-yard rush … At the 5:59 mark in the third quarter, Hokie Cory Holt attempted a quarterback draw on third down but was brought down by Brown for a 4-yard loss, forcing Virginia Tech to punt … Record Watch: Brown finished the game with four tackles for losses (3 sacks), increasing his career total to 36.5 and moving him into sole possession of sixth place on the all-time list at Florida State … Brown's four tackles for losses also were a single-game career-high for the defensive end, as were his three sacks … Head-to-Head Competition: OT#77-Ed Wang (6:05-310)-One illegal-formation penalty.

Georgia Tech … Brown finished the game with two solo tackles, including one behind the line of scrimmage, and a forced fumble, but it wasn't enough for a win, as FSU fullback Marcus Sims' fourth-quarter fumble into the end zone sealed the 31-28 victory for Georgia Tech … Just before halftime, Brown was credited with limiting Yellow Jacket quarterback Josh Nesbitt to a 1-yard rush … Early in the second half, the FSU defensive end tackled freshman quarterback Jaybo Shaw 7 yards behind the line of scrimmage, forcing the signal-caller to fumble the ball, which was recovered by the Seminole defense … Record Watch: Brown's third-quarter tackle for loss was the 37th of his career, tying him with former Seminole Broderick Bunkley for fifth place on FSU's career tackles-for-loss list. Brown has been credit with at least one tackle for loss in seven of FSU's eight games … Head-to-Head Competition: OT#64-Andrew Gardner (6:06-305)-One false-start penalty.

Clemson … Like he has done so many times throughout his career, Brown got after the quarter-back vs. Clemson, registering five solos tackles, including three sacks, and a pressure in the Seminoles' decisive 41-27 victory over the Tigers on head coach Bobby Bowden's 79th birthday … Near the end of the first quarter, Brown got good pressure on Clemson quarterback Cullen Harper, causing the signal-caller's screen pass to be picked off by FSU defensive lineman Neefy Moffett, who returned the interception 18 yards for a touchdown, tying the score at 10-10 … Said Moffett of the play, "I was at nose [guard] and we had a little stunt where the end goes in and I go around. I saw the screen at the last minute and, when Everette Brown hit the quarterback, it caused a bad throw and I just intercepted it and scored. I felt like I owed my team that. Everette did all the work and I did the easy part" … At the 6:53 mark in the second quarter, Brown sacked Harper for an 11-yard loss on a 3rd-and-7 play, forcing the Tigers to punt … With less than two minutes remaining in the second quarter, Brown registered his second sack of the game when he brought down Harper 3 yards behind the line of scrimmage … Early in the second half, Brown tackled Clemson tailback James Davis after a 4-yard run … Brown's third sack of the contest came moments into the fourth quarter, when the defensive end tackled Cullen Harper for a 6-yard loss, forcing the Tigers to punt the ball back to FSU … Brown chased down Tiger tailback C.J. Spiller after a 14-yard gain near the end of the contest … Record Watch: Brown's three tackles for losses (all sacks) gave him 40 for his career, moving him past Broderick Bunkley (37) and into sole possession of fifth place on FSU's career tackles-for-loss list … Brown's three sacks vs. Clemson tied his single-game career high (Virginia Tech, 2008), and his nine sacks on the season moved him into a tie for 13th place (Broderick Bunkley, 2005; Reinard Wilson, 1995; and Carl Simpson, 1992) on FSU's career sacks list. This game also marked Brown's third multi-sack contest of the season … Head-to-Head Competition: OT#61-Chris Hairston (6:06-320).

Boston College … Following the suspension of five of its players due to fighting, the shorthanded No. 20 Florida State Seminoles fell to Boston College, 27-17, in front of a disappointed home crowd … The Seminole's star defensive end, Everette Brown, finished the contest with five tackles (3 solos), including one tackle for loss, and a fumble recovery, the first one of his career … During the opening minutes of the second quarter, BC quarter-back Chris Crane was sacked by FSU defender Neefy Moffett, who stripped the ball, which was subsequently recovered by Brown, who returned the ball 5 yards to the BC 31-yard line … Early in the third quarter, Brown tackled BC tailback Montel Harris after an 8-yard rush on 3rd-and-10 … In the opening minute of the fourth quarter, Harris broke off a 6-yard run up the middle before Brown could tackle him … Later in the fourth quarter, Brown and Moffett teamed up to stop Chris Crane for no gain on a quarterback sneak on 3rd-and-1 from the BC 41-yard line, but an FSU 15-yard personal foul gave the Eagles a first down. On the same drive, Brown was credited with stopping Montel Harries for a 1-yard loss at the FSU 45-yard line and, later, for a 2-yard gain on 1st-and-goal form the FSU 5-yard line … Head-to-Head Competition: OT#74-Anthony Castonzo (6:07-287)-One false-start penalty.
