04/28/2009 - A closer look at the Colts' picks: Round 7/222 -- Pat McAfee, P, 5-11, 228, West Virginia...Indianapolis traded 2010's sixth-round pick to Philadelphia in order to get an additional selection in the seventh round. McAfee will be given every opportunity to become the Colts' new punter and holder. Averaged 44.7 yards on 62 punt attempts last fall for the Mountaineers and was a finalist for the Ray Guy Award in 2008. Could also kick off and handle long field goal attempts if needed.
01/05/2009 - West Virginia kicker Pat McAfee won't have to look very far for a tour guide at the Under Armour Senior Bowl later this month. McAfee is the third Mountaineer to accept an invite to the 60th game, joining South Alabama natives Pat White and Ellis Lankster on the South roster. Kickoff for the January 24th game is scheduled for 6 pm (CT) and the game will be televised by the NFL Network. While he excelled at both punting and kicking for the Mountaineers, McAfee will only handle the kicking duties for the South in the 60th game. A second-team Walter Camp All-American in 2008, McAfee made good on 16 of 19 field goals this season and all 32 of his extra points. He booted a career long 52 yard field goal twice this season and is West Virginia's all-time leading scorer with 377 points. - WBOY-TV
Twice named second-team All-Big East punter, his per-punt average increased from 42.7 to 44.7 in 2008, good enough to make the top 10 in the FBS. West Virginia was among the top FBS teams in net punting; McAfee landed 25 punts inside the 20. The four-year kicker also earned second-team All-Big East honors at that position, as he made 17-of-20 field goal attempts including 6-of-7 from 40-plus yards. Trained to play soccer this fall, but quit the team to enhance his NFL draft status.
Analysis
Positives: Good, not great, leg strength. Can get 4.5-second hang-time on punts of 40 yards or longer to force fair catches. Capable of placing the ball inside the 10. Handles poor snaps. Strong last line of defense; has a stout build, can get the angle and is aggressive in tackling returners in the open field. Snaps his hips through the ball on placements, part of his soccer background. Holds a full follow-through after placements.
Negatives: Has a slow three-step delivery (1.4 seconds) when not using a rugby style. Doesn't get a spiral or turn over most punts. His longer punts are limited in hang-time (around 4.3 seconds). Limited directional-kicking ability. Must get placement kicks in the air more quickly to prevent blocks. Missed two field goal tries of reasonable distance in the 2007 loss to Pittsburgh at home which cost WVU a shot at the national championship. Was not accurate from 40-plus yards before 2008, making only 11-of-25 attempts over his first three seasons. Most of his kickoffs do not reach the end zone; must sacrifice hang-time to get it there.
