04/27/2009 - With six players claimed in the weekend's NFL draft, Mizzou produced its most abundant harvest since seven were picked in 1981. But the player perhaps most crucial to MU's resurgence, quarterback Chase Daniel, wasn't among the chosen. Throwing for more than 12,000 yards in his career, being a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2007 and leading the Tigers to a 22-6 record the last two seasons wasn't enough to eclipse a level of skepticism over his height (6 feet) or label as a so-called system quarterback. Moreover ..."The draft is a crazy thing," said Daniel's agent, Jeff Nalley, who noted that quarterbacks such as Texas Tech's Graham Harrell and Daniel were neglected even as "a guy from West Texas A&M (Keith Null, to the Rams) no one ever has heard of gets drafted." But at Daniel's house in Southlake, Texas, on Sunday evening, you wouldn't have been thinking about any perceived snubs. Even if he was disappointed not to be selected, Daniel was elated to be signing a two-year free agent contract with the Washington Redskins. The paperwork is to be done this morning. Thirty or so friends and family members toasted him with champagne. "He proved everybody wrong at Missouri, and now he has the chance to do the same thing (in the NFL)," Nalley said. "I wouldn't bet against him." - Vahe Gregorian, The Post-Dispatch

04/27/2009 - The Redskins added to their rookie crop on Monday, agreeing to terms with 13 undrafted free agents on contracts. Quarterback Chase Daniel threw for more than 12,500 yards and tossed 101 touchdowns in four years at Missouri. He threw to the likes of wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, a first-round draft choice by the Philadelphia Eagles, and tight end Chase Coffman, a third-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals. - Gary Fitzgerald, Redskins.com

  • Overview

Although Daniel lacks prototypical height, he has not come up short in his production or moxie for the Tigers. The 2007 Heisman finalist was a three-year starter in Missouri's spread offense (which he also ran in high school), completing 68.5 percent of his passes (72.9 percent in 2008) for 12,515 yards and 100 touchdowns. Though he's rarely given credit for his mobility, Daniel also ran for almost 1,000 yards during his career.

His pro grade may depend on which film teams use when grading him, as he started off his senior campaign as hot as any quarterback in the country, leading Missouri to as high as a No. 4 ranking by throwing for a staggering 15 touchdowns against only one interception. A tough outing against Oklahoma State (one touchdown, three interceptions) led to a steady decline in consistency and production as the 2008 season wore, culminating in a disappointing week of practice at the East-West Shrine Game.

No one can argue with his production, but Daniel's lack of height, arm-strength and ability to rally down the stretch could result in him falling completely out of the draft.

    Analysis

Positives: Gutty, competitive field general. A virtual coach on the field. Reads defenses well and checks down effectively. Good accuracy to all levels. Shows enough zip in the short to intermediate throws when given a deep pocket. Good touch to place the ball between the linebackers and safeties down the seams. More elusive than often given credit for. Can buy time in and out of the pocket and shows good accuracy on the move.

Negatives: May be too short for the NFL. Scouts believe his success in this system is greatly tied to throwing out of the shotgun -- and thereby the open passing lanes and middle underneath passes of the scheme. Seemed to provide further evidence of this theory with his struggles at the East-West Shrine game. Questionable arm strength. Has the zip to complete the short and intermediate passes, but has to wind-up for longer throws and due to his lack of height and release point, longer passes tend to sail.
