12/28/2011 - Scouting the Cal run defense: Rating Cal's run defense depends on whether you are rating it at home or on the road. In home games, Cal has been a virtual stone wall, stopped Utah's John White IV and every other running back cold at San Francisco's AT&T Park, Cal's home field this season. But on the road, Cal has been a sieve against the run, allowing Arizona State's Cameron Marshall to rush for 157 yards despite a severely sprained ankle, yielding 163 rushing yards to UCLA QB Kevin Prince, and letting Oregon's LaMichael James run for 239 yards. How Cal will do on a neutral field in a bowl is anyone's guess, but Texas has a much better running game than Arizona State or UCLA. Cal's two inside linebacker Mychal Kendricks, the Pac-12 defensive player of the year, and D.J. Holt are the main weapons against the run. - The Sports Xchange

10/06/2011 - SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: The Bears' defense has been awfully good against the run, and poor against the pass. The Bears rank 12th in the country in run defense, yielding 78.3 yards a game, but they rank 81st of 119 teams in pass defense. The Bears have 13 sacks so they have been applying enough pressure, but Washington and Colorado did virtually whatever they wanted to do in the air. Their quarterbacks, Colorado's Tyler Hansen and Washington's Keith Price, are good, but probably not as good as what Cal will see the next two weeks from Oregon's Darron Thomas and USC's Matt Barkley. Look for freshman CB Stefan McClure to get more playing time against Oregon, and he may be a starter before long. - The Sports Xchange

09/23/2011 - KEEP AN EYE ON: LB D.J. Holt - Fellow ILB Mychal Kendricks gets most of the publicity, but Holt leads the team in tackles. He had just 4.5 tackles against Presbyterian, but because the first-team defense played so little in the game, that was enough to lead the team. Holt has 18.5 tackles for the season. - The Sports Xchange
