03/06/2012 - Former UAB offensive tackle Matt McCants wasn't looking to erase what hap??pened at the NFL Combine. He was looking to supple??ment what he did in late February in Indianapolis when he attended UAB's Pro Day on Monday at Le??gion Field. Improving his time in the 40-yard dash was one of McCants' main objectives. McCants' best time at Le??gion Field was 5.45 seconds, which wasn't a big im??provement from the 5.52 he ran at the combine. But it was enough to satisfy McCants. "I think I showed the scouts that I have some ability, some athleticism," McCants said. The 6-foot-5, 308-pound player was one of about 20 former college players looking to impress scouts from eight NFL teams on Monday. Thirteen of the players were from UAB while Jacksonville State, Miles College and Tuskegee were also represented. Scouts from the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins and Hous??ton Texans attended the workout. - Steve Irvine, The Birmingham News

01/04/2012 - 2012 SENIOR BOWL INVITE: The 2012 Senior Bowl will be a homecoming for UAB offensive tackle Matt McCants. McCants, a Mobile native and former Williamson High School standout, has officially accepted an invitation to the senior showcase event. "Matt will go down as one of the best offensive linemen in UAB history," Senior Bowl President and CEO Steve Hale said. "The fact that he gets to return to his hometown and play one last time in front of his friends and family on the very same field he played high school football is an added bonus." McCants earned first team All-Conference USA honors for the second straight year this season. The 6-7, 295 pound left tackle was a key reason the Blazers ranked fourth in the conference in sacks allowed in 2011. The Blazers allowed just 30 sacks in 24 games for an average of 1.5 sacks per game. "My dream when I left to go to UAB was to always come back and to one day have a chance to play in the Senior Bowl," McCants said. "It's almost like a dream come true, really." "My mom and dad are so proud of me and it will give a chance for a lot of my friends and family that didn't see me play at UAB to see me play in the biggest all-star game ever." McCants was a four year starter for the Blazers, notching 42 career starts over that span-including every single game his sophomore and junior years. A former tuba player in the marching band, McCants didn't play football until his senior year at Williamson. McCants is the seventh player in UAB history to receive a Senior Bowl invite and first since former Blazer quarterback/wide receiver Joe Webb in 2010. - SeniorBowl.com
