"Caleb Sturgis has accepted an invitation to play in our game," said Harold Richardson, executive director of the East-West Shrine Game. "We have received his paperwork and everything for the game."
While many seniors want to participate in the Senior Bowl, Sturgis playing in the East-West game could be a good thing. "Last year, all four of our kickers are playing in the NFL this year," Richardson said. "St. Louis' kicker [Greg Zuerlein] hit the game winner last week against San Francisco was in the game last year for us." Sturgis is a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, which will be given to the nation's top kicker on Tuesday night. 08/06/2012 - Redshirt senior K Caleb Sturgis is tired of injuries. The Lou Groza Award finalist just wants to get on the field and stay there. "The big thing for me, as always, I just want to be healthy," he said. "Obviously, the last two years, I haven't been as healthy as I want to be." After earning full-time kicking duties in 2009, a back injury forced Sturgis to miss the final nine games of the 2010 campaign. Sturgis followed up his injury-shortened season by posting the best numbers of his career, but the St. Augustine native still could not stay out of harm's way. He converted two early field-goal attempts during last season's 17-6 loss to Auburn, but a leg injury sidelined him for the entire second half. If Sturgis had been healthy, the Gators might have ended up with three points instead of a failed fourth-and-four attempt on the Tigers' 16-yard line during the fourth quarter. Coach Will Muschamp said he is confident in Sturgis' ability to score from "52-yard range." Sturgis said that while it depends on the situation, he believes he could hit "anywhere inside of 60." Sturgis is a fan of the new kickoff rule, which states the receiving team will get the ball at the 25-yard line if the ball is kicked into the end zone and not returned. "There's a lot of coaches out there that are thinking, 'Twenty-five-yard line, that's pretty far up the field to start, so are they really going to kick it deep?'" he said. "It's in a lot of special teams coordinators' heads right now." - Joe Morgan, The Orlando Sentinel
