04/08/2013 - 2013 South Carolina Pro Day: There were 32 NFL teams represented at South Carolina Pro Day on March 27. Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis was among the coaches who attended. A total of 18 players worked out on field-turf outdoors in 50 degree weather with 5 mph wind. Devin Taylor DE (6-7 ??, 273 pounds) -- He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.87 seconds and recorded 16 strength lifts. They worked him out as both a defensive end with his hand on the ground and a guy that plays in space. If the light ever goes on and Taylor realizes how good he can be, somebody will get a really good player. - Gil Brandt, NFL.com

01/01/2013 - Scouting the South Carolina pass defense: The South Carolina front four has made life miserable for quarterbacks throughout the season. DEs Jadeveon Clowney, Devin Taylor and Chaz Sutton have been the reason the Gamecocks have amassed 40 sacks. Clowney, an All-American, has led the way with a school-record 13 sacks. Due to the play of the front, the team has not relied on blitzes, which has allowed the team to drop seven into pass defense. Opponents are averaging 193.2 yards game through the air. - The Sports Xchange

09/25/2012 - 09/24/12 NFL DRAFT SCOUT FALLER: DE DEVIN TAYLOR, SOUTH CAROLINA...After a breakout sophomore campaign with 7.5 sacks in 2010, Gamecocks defensive end Devin Taylor has failed to live up to the hype as a future first round pick. Now a senior, he is still searching for his first sack of the 2012 season through four games. Playing opposite Jadeveon Clowney, Taylor should thrive with offenses game-planning against limiting the sophomore sensation, but so far, he has struggled to beat single blockers and does not even rank in the top-10 on the team in total tackles. He has the imposing height and length that the NFL loves for the position with the motor to fight through the whistle, but is lean-muscled and lacks the bulk or overall strength to defeat blocks or work through the trash. Taylor has stiff hips, which limits his fluidity and burst to the play, and is more of a one-speed long-striding athlete, struggling to show explosion off the snap. He will drop in coverage at times, but there are large question marks about his ability to hold up in space in the NFL because of his suspect redirection skills. While he still has two-thirds of his senior season left to improve his draft stock, Taylor is not off to a great start. - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com

09/22/2012 - Five Prospects I'll Be Watching Saturday: Devin Taylor, DE, South Carolina: At a chiseled 6-7, 267 pounds, it is easy to understand why many believe that Taylor is the next South Carolina defender to warrant early round consideration by NFL teams. He's earned recognition from SEC coaches after each of the past three seasons and his presence allowed Steve Spurrier and his defensive staff the flexibility of moving Melvin Ingram around a season ago to create mismatches for the eventual first round pick of the San Diego Chargers. Taylor registered 42 tackles a season ago, including 8.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. While there are some who believe his numbers are certain to improve this season, I have concerns about his ability to transition to the NFL. Taylor, while explosive off the snap and a high-effort player, lacks the flexibility preferred in pass rushers. Too often, he'll rush upfield but be unable to adjust as mobile ball-carriers squirt past him. This is precisely what I anticipate Missouri's athletic quarterback James Franklin may be able to do againt Taylor (though not necessarily against USC's Jadeveon Clowney) I agree with Gary Danielson, who will be calling this game with Verne Lundquist, that the winner of the pass rush battle between South Carolina and Missouri will win this key SEC showdown. This game begins at 3:30 pm eastern and will be televised by CBS. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com

05/08/2012 - 2012 College Football Freaks List: 2. Devin Taylor, South Carolina, DE: When you're on a team with Jadeveon Clowney (a 6-6, 260-pounder with a 37.5-inch vertical) and you're the biggest freak in the program, that's saying something. The 6-7 Beaufort, S.C., native was an intriguing prospect that the Gamecocks' arch-rival Clemson never offered. Taylor, who won the state high school triple jump title, had good but not great football film. His demeanor, though, also made him a tough prospect to gauge, recalls the Gamecocks' D-line coach Brad Lawing. "People weren't sure about him. He was very intelligent, but he's an introvert," Lawing said. The veteran D-line coach admitted he tested Taylor in summer camp: "I do 'combatives' with him. I'm gonna punch you as a O-lineman. I tried to punch a hole in his chest. Well, I could see how fired up he got. His eyes got red. He about whipped my ass when he came with his best pass rush move and it was violent." The Gamecocks' staff was sold. Taylor has blossomed in Columbia in a spectacular way. He arrived at 215 pounds, but now is an explosive 267-pounder who just broad-jumped 10-feet, 11-inches, verticals in the high 30s and has change-of-direction skills like a 5-9 cornerback. He has started 32 games in his career and has 27 TFLs and 15.5 sacks. Not bad for a guy who was once ranked as the 21st-best player in the state of South Carolina by one recruiting site and touted as the 93rd-best defensive end prospect by another. And the guy is still developing. Adds Lawing: "He probably just started shaving last year." - Bruce Feldman, CBS Sports
