05/07/2014 - 2014 NFL Draft: 126 FBS programs, 126 possible UDFAs: CLEMSON: RB Roderick McDowell (5-9, 204, 4.70)...After waiting his turn behind Andre Ellington, McDowell stepped into the starting running back role in 2013, finishing with 1,025 rushing yards - easy to overlook due to the offensive firepower on the team. - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com

02/17/2014 - Roderick McDowell's his same old upbeat self, whether he's a past or present Clemson running back. The ebullient optimist, McDowell doesn't much care if or when he's going to hear his name called during the 2014 NFL draft. All that matters is the here and now, which two nights ago was the College Football All-Star Bowl at Furman University along with former Clemson linebackers Spencer Shuey and Quandon Christian and long snapper Philip Fajgenbaum. Yeah, McDowell misses Clemson. He was there five years as a tailback. "It's like a second home to me," McDowell said. "But I know for a fact, when I left there, I learned some important (lessons) about not just football, but life after football and being a man. So I miss Clemson, but they prepared me for life after Clemson, and that's why I'm ready for it."

McDowell and Shuey, both third-team all-ACC selections by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association, figure as outside shots to be drafted, perhaps latching on as a free agent or practice-squad player down the road. They were productive seniors - McDowell recorded a 1,000-yard season on the ground, and Shuey's 119 tackles were second on the squad - but they won't join five ex-teammates at the NFL Scouting Combine this coming weekend. "Getting an invite to the Combine, not getting an invite - at the end of the day, scouts gotta come to your school and you've got to put it on no matter what," McDowell said. "It's all about getting your opportunity, and March 6, when the scouts come to Clemson, we're gonna put on a show for them, do what we do." - Aaron Brenner, Charleston Post Courier

12/13/2013 - 2013 ALL-ACC THIRD TEAM (COACHES): RB-Roderick McDowell, Sr.-R, Clemson (13)...Has been selected Third Team All-ACC for the 2013 college football season by the ACC Coaches. - Clemson football

12/04/2013 - 2013 ALL-ACC THIRD TEAM (MEDIA): RB Roderick McDowell, Clemson, 5-9, 195, Gr.-R, Sumter, S.C. (85)...McDowell ranks third in the ACC in rushing with 956 yards and has scored five touchdowns. His 5.4 yards per carry figure is fifth in the ACC. He averaged 101 rushing yards per game against top 25 teams this year, 15th best in the nation. - Clemson football

09/19/2013 - Scouting the Clemson running game: Roderick "Hot Rod" McDowell remains the Tigers' starter and primary running threat, but several backs have had a big impact over Clemson's first two games. Backup Zac Brooks had a touchdown catch against Georgia, third-teamer D.J. Howard had a 19-yard scoring run and fourth-teamer C.J. Davidon led the team with 63 yards on the ground against S.C. State. McDowell suffered a concussion against S.C. State on Sept. 7, but he's been cleared to return to action, so expect the senior to carry the bulk of the load for a rushing attack that is averaging 190 yards per game behind a veteran offensive front. - The Sports Xchange

09/05/2013 - Rod McDowell showed he was ready to step into the backfield for No. 4 Clemson. Now, he's out to prove he can do it all season long. McDowell, nicknamed "Hot Rod" since high school, ran for 132 yards in his first career start to help the Tigers beat No. 11 Georgia 38-35 last Saturday night. He had spent four seasons waiting on the Clemson sidelines behind NFL backs C.J. Spiller, Jamie Harper and Andre Ellington and excelled against the Bulldogs with 132 yards. McDowell and the Tigers (1-0) take on FCS opponent South Carolina State (0-1) on Saturday.

Morris thought McDowell worked hard throughout the offseason at developing his skills and improving things like pass-blocking and moving properly without the ball so wouldn't miss out on his opportunity. McDowell said he won't get complacent, no matter how well he might play down the road. "That's what's wrong with some successful dudes, they get successful and they get caught up in the hype and they lose their craft," he says. "You can't lose your craft or somebody behind you is going to come up and take your spot. That's why I keep that mindset." McDowell's prepared to build his showing against Georgia and show that his choice to stay was the right one. "It was worth the wait and I feel like I have the testimony for young kids out there," he said. "When times get hard, don't think about running away. If you really want something, work hard for it no matter what comes your way. You just have to really want it." - AP Sports

08/27/2013 - 2013 ACC BREAKOUT PLAYERS: Clemson: RB Roderick "Hot Rod" McDowell...McDowell has toiled in relative obscurity behind C.J. Spiller, Jamie Harper and Andre Ellington over the last four seasons, but now it's his time to shine. McDowell is cut from the Ellington mold -- smallish but powerful, and capable of explosive bursts -- and if the Tigers could get similar production (Ellington closed his Clemson career with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons), offensive coordinator Chad Morris will be more than content. McDowell showed flashes last season in relief of Ellington, amassing 450 yards and scoring five touchdowns. - Jeff Reynolds, The Sports Xchange

06/27/2013 - Other Clemson prospects worth watching: RB Roderick McDowell (5-9, 195, 4.47)...With Ellington off to the NFL, McDowell finally gets his chance to be Clemson's feature running back. - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com
