12/16/2013 - 2013 ALL-AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM (COACHES): S Hakeem Smith, Louisville, Sr., 6-2 179, Jonesboro, Ga./Riverdale,...Smith, a senior, who ranked in the top 20 in the league in passes defended, became the first Louisville player since Ronnie Ghent (2000-03) to earn all-conference honors each of their four years. For the season, the Jonesboro, Ga., native intercepted three passes this season - two in conference play - and recorded his lone sack against league-foe Rutgers. - Louisville football

10/18/2013 - Scouting the Louisville pass defense: Knights QB Blake Bortles won't make the plethora of mistakes Rutgers' Gary Nova did last week. Bortles hits nearly 65 percent of his passes and has just three interceptions in 143 attempts. But the Cardinals have the nation's fifth-best pass defense. - The Sports Xchange

10/10/2013 - Scouting the Louisville pass defense: Scarlet Knights QB Gary Nova has a well-deserved reputation for streakiness and killing mistakes, but he can also hit the deep ball. He's already thrown 13 TD passes in five games and has improved his accuracy a bit this year. Can he maintain his poise if Louisville gets its pass rush cranking? - The Sports Xchange

09/11/2013 - Scouting the Louisville pass defense: Last week, the pass rush helped the secondary out a great deal, but 99 yards is still a good week's work, even against an FCS opponent. Kentucky and its spread offense will represent one of the stiffest challenges the Cardinals face this season. - The Sports Xchange

08/11/2013 - PLAYERS TO WATCH IN 2013: SS Hakeem Smith will be the defense's leader as he heads into his fourth year as a starter. Smith has started 39 straight game and was third on the team in tackles last year with 73, recording seven pass breakups as well. - The Sports Xchange

08/11/2013 - TOP LOUISVILLE PROSPECTS FOR THE 2014 NFL DRAFT: 3. S Hakeem Smith (6-1, 188, 4.58)...Smith enters his senior year a three-year starter and three-time ALL-BIG EAST safety. He's listed a bit light for the position and may need to bulk up, but has been able to balance physical play with good decision-making and fundamentals, and has proven thus far to be durable. He possesses a naturally explosive first step to close on plays in front of him, and uses his length well to disrupt throws as they arrive. Over the top, he exhibits fluid hips in transition, tracks the ball well, and attacks the ball at the high point.

Already a top-10 safety prospect heading into the season, he could find himself in top-5 company by draft day, if he can show improvement in terms of finishing more plays with turnovers, as he has been more apt to break up passes thanvsnatch them away (1 career INT). Smith is a smart, well-rounded safety who gives you a good balance of run support and strong coverage, and will no doubt be auditioning for an early-round selection next May. - Derek Stephens, NFLDraftScout.com

A second-team honoree last season, Smith finished third on the squad with 73 tackles, but has been a mainstay in the secondary with 38 career starts and owns a string of 37 straight. - Louisville football
