01/01/2013 - Scouting the Wisconsin run defense: Wisconsin's ability to contain teams from big rushing games has helped keep the Badgers somewhat on steady ground most of the season. Entering the Big Ten title game, Wisconsin ranked second in the Big Ten and 12th nationally in rushing defense, allowing 111.3 yards per game. Wisconsin limited Ohio State to a season-low 139 rushing yards and held Michigan State TB Le'Veon Bell to only 77 yards rushing. Bell averaged 142.8 yards on the ground in Michigan State's other 11 games. Wisconsin's ability to limit the big play to Taylor Martinez's long scoring run in the title game on Dec. 1 was a major reason for the late-season run to the Rose Bowl.

Wisconsin allowed only 3.4 yards per carry in the regular season. Through the first 12 games, Wisconsin was one of eight teams in the country to allow eight rushing touchdowns or fewer, giving up eight total. 07/28/2012 - The scouting report on Wisconsin senior linebacker Mike Taylor is complimentary and succinct: Fundamentally sound, assignment sure and possesses a high pain tolerance. "Mike does the fundamental things you dream about having players do," said Dave Doeren, who coached Taylor in 2009 and 2010 and is entering his second season as head coach at Northern Illinois. "He wasn't a guy you had to tell the same thing to more than once, which allows you to progress a player developmentally..."He played through a lot of pain yet he made a lot of plays. And he's not going to tell you that things hurt." Speaking Friday on the second day of the Big Ten Conference preseason meetings, Taylor sheepishly acknowledged that as a redshirt freshman in 2009 and for the first few games of the '10 season his fundamentals and understanding of UW's schemes were, to be polite, a bit shaky. "I wasn't sure of the playbook," the fifth-year senior from Ashwaubenon said, chuckling at the memory of the acting job he pulled off. "There were times I made plays and I didn't even know what the call was. I'm serious." Told that Doeren tabbed him as perhaps his most trustworthy player in 2009 and '10, Taylor roared. "You just can't laugh or smile in the film rooms," Taylor said, recalling those two seasons. "You've just got to nod your head and make it look like you know everything if you want to play. "That's how it was for me early on...It worried me because I didn't know what to do and I was out there in front of 85,000 people wondering: 'What do I do?' " Taylor generally is polite but serious during interviews and isn't considered loquacious. However, he was chatty and gregarious Friday while discussing his early years at UW. - Jeff Potrykus, The Journal Sentinel
