08/09/2011 - 2011 PRESEASON ALL-ATLANTIC COAST CONFERENCE TEAM (MEDIA): Safety Eddie Whitley, Virginia Tech (17), Senior, has been selected to the 2011 Preseason All-ACC Football team in voting conducted by the media at the annual ACC Football Kickoff. - ACC football

05/11/2011 - BUILDING BLOCKS: Defensively, the back seven should be strong with proven players at linebacker and in the secondary. The headliner is All-America CB Jayron Hosley, who intercepted nine passes to tie a school record for a single season. FS Eddie Whitley and LB Bruce Taylor will also be leaders on that side of the ball. - The Sports Xchange

11/15/2010 - LOOKING GOOD: The Hokies' defense forced five of North Carolina's six turnovers, intercepting T.J. Yates four times, and allowed just 97 second-half yards. The offense finished with 418 total yards and didn't turn the ball over. In the kicking game, PK Chris Hazley drilled four field goals, stretching his streak of makes to 17. - The Sports Xchange

11/15/2010 - The Hokies had held six straight teams under 50 percent completions until North Carolina's T.J. Yates completed 18 of 33 for 197 yards. But Yates also tossed four interceptions, giving the Hokies 16 picks in 2010. QUOTE TO NOTE: "We knew there were plays to make. It was just a question of if we could make them." - FS Eddie Whitley, who had one of the secondary's four interceptions at North Carolina. - The Sports Xchange

11/15/2010 - Defensive coordinator Bud Foster's game plan was two-pronged for Saturday's key Atlantic Coast Conference game at North Carolina. First, he wanted to prevent the Tar Heels from using wide receiver Dwight Jones as their big-play instrument, so he bracketed him frequently and refused to give him free runs off the scrimmage line. Second, he wanted to force North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates to check down to running backs and tight ends, figuring the senior might get impatient and start forcing the ball downfield. Mission accomplished - on both counts. Jones had just one meaningless catch for 4 yards, and Yates matched his season total for interceptions (four) in one frustrating afternoon. The Hokies' 26-10 win not only eliminated North Carolina from the Coastal Division race, it moved Virginia Tech within one victory of reaching the ACC championship game Dec. 4 in Charlotte. "We wanted to make sure we had the deep passes covered," Foster said. "I'm not going to give anything away because we play those guys every year, but we made some adjustments." Tech forced six turnovers on the day, including a clutch goal-line stand midway through the fourth quarter when Jeron Gouveia-Winslow forced an Anthony Elby fumble near the goal line that rolled through the end zone for a touchback. Offensively, Tyrod Taylor threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns - both to Marcus Davis - while tailbacks Darren Evans and Ryan Williams combined for 173 yards on 29 rushes. It added up to an eighth straight win for the Hokies and left coach Frank Beamer a happy man. "I'm proud of our football team," he said. "I think the team's getting closer and closer and believing in each other and trusting each other. We've got a bunch of good guys on this team." - The Sports Xchange

11/08/2010 - FS Eddie Whitley (foot) returned to the lineup against Georgia Tech after missing the Duke game, but had a quiet night and didn't record a tackle. - The Sports Xchange

11/04/2010 - SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: There was improvement against Duke as big plays were cut to a minimum and tackling improved. This will be a tougher test against an offense Virginia Tech sees once a season. It must play smart assignment football and tackle well. PLAYERS TO WATCH: FS Eddie Whitley (foot) will return against Georgia Tech after sitting out the win over Duke. The bye week gave Whitley 12 days to heal the injury. - The Sports Xchange

09/30/2010 - SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: Just in time for a test from QB Russell Wilson and N.C. State, the Hokies are back to playing fast and hitting hard. They held BC to 39 yards in the second half, rattling QBs Dave Shinskie and Mike Marscovetra with relentless blitzes that produced six sacks. PLAYERS TO WATCH: FS Eddie Whitley - Charged with getting the Hokies in the right defense on every play, Whitley also has to play smart positional football. He can't allow N.C. State's speedy receivers to get behind him for big plays.

09/08/2010 - SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: While there were bright spots and some big plays, there were also breakdowns and poor tackling. That's to be expected from a unit fielding seven new starters against a veteran team like Boise State. Poor field position hurt them on three scoring drives, including the last one. PLAYERS TO WATCH: FS Eddie Whitley - The converted cornerback might have been Tech's best defender against Boise State, playing well in run support and also making plays when the Broncos passed. He'll look to do a better job of getting the team in proper alignment, the free safety's job at Tech.
