09/22/2011 - Ball State is operating in rarefied air through three games with a 2-1 record. The Cardinals have been 2-1 or better after three games only three times in the past 16 seasons. Their resolve to build off that somewhat unexpected start will get a stern test this week. The Cardinals already figured they would have a battle on their hands when they host Army on Sept. 24, but the banged-up state of their personnel might make it even more challenging to defeat the Black Knights. Ball State is something of a walking MASH unit right now with several starters walking around gimpy or already ruled out of the game. Starters Jason Pinkston (cornerback), Austin Holtz (offensive tackle) and nickel defensive back Quinton Cooper likely are out this week. Holtz and Cooper have knee injuries and Pinkston has been hobbled much of the season by a hamstring injury. Because this week's game is a non-conference outing, those players likely will sit to try to facilitate the healing process. Receiver Jack Tomlinson (hip), middle linebacker Travis Freeman (ankle) and center Kreg Hunter (ankle) all are hobbled but should play. All three are starters. - The Sports Xchange
