05/12/2014 - For the last nine years, at least one undrafted rookie has made the Broncos' 53-man roster coming out of the preseason. The best bet to take that streak to 10 years is Fresno State wide receiver Isaiah Burse. A projected late-round selection, Burse agreed to terms with the Broncos immediately after the draft, and fills a need that was left unfilled with the Broncos' six picks: kickoff and punt returner. The team opted not to re-sign fumble-prone Trindon Holliday, letting him leave for the Falcons. Before the draft, their return option was wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, but general manager John Elway was hesitant to use one of his projected starting receivers in that role.
Burse handled kickoff and punt returns at Fresno State. But his long-term development could hinge on how well he learns the slot receiver position. At the Scouting Combine, Burse cited Wes Welker as a player after whom he tries to model his game, and admitted that he would love to be with the Broncos. "I've thought about it," Burse said in February. "If the Broncos decided to call my phone and draft me, whatever the case may be, as soon as I get there, I'd be picking his brain instantly, from the moment I touched down. "I would just want to become a human sponge and soak in all the knowledge he's got, about how he's been so successful -- and what I've got to do to be successful." Burse was one of 15 undrafted free agents the Broncos added after the draft. The group is headlined by Colorado State running back Kapri Bibbs, Oklahoma running back Brennan Clay and North Carolina quarterback Bryn Renner, who should push Zac Dysert for the No. 3 position behind Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler. - The Sports Xchange
