05/12/2014 - A closer look at the Cardinals' picks: Round 2/52 - Troy Niklas, TE, 6-6, 270, Notre Dame...Niklas left after his junior year and played tight end for only two seasons. The Cardinals think he is just scratching the surface of his abilities. They believe he already is a solid blocker and will give them play-action options. - The Sports Xchange

05/12/2014 - Arians believes the tight end position has been "totally upgraded" since he took over as head coach in 2013. The latest addition is Troy Niklas, a second-round pick out of Notre Dame. "He can handle the line of scrimmage," Arians said. "He is the leanest 270 (pounds) I have ever seen, but he also is a threat down the field as a pass receiver - bends and turns very well, catches low balls, which is very hard for 6-6 guys. To me, he is an all-around tight end who the sky is the limit.' Niklas should help the Cardinals in short yardage because they want to have put a third tackle into the game. When that happens "you lose a lot because the safety is down there two yards from the line of scrimmage because you know he's not going off our pass," Arians said. "This is a big, strong guy who can go out for passes. We are very versatile now." Niklas left school a year early. If he had stayed, "he would have been a top 10 pick with that skill set," Arians said. - The Sports Xchange

05/08/2014 - 2014 DRAFT SCOUT FINAL TOP 100: 73/4. *Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame, 6-7, 270, 4.86, 2-3...Niklas began as an edge defensive player at Notre Dame and has only two years of experience at tight end. But his upside was obvious after emerging as a surprise star following the departure of Tyler Eifert (first round, Bengals, 2013). Niklas will become the seventh member of the NFL's Matthews family to be drafted. After cousin Jake Matthews (OT, Texas A&M) is taken in the first round, Niklas will be the fifth Matthews relative in NFL history to be selected in the first two rounds. Frankly: Considering shared genetics with uncle (Hall of Fame OT) Bruce and 2014 draft classmate and cousin Jake Matthews (Texas A&M OT), it's no surprise that Niklas has excellent blocking skills. He could become the best blocking tight end in the NFL. He is a deceptively good receiver, but is still a work in progress there. - Frank Cooney, NFLDraftScout.com

01/10/2014 - Notre Dame tight end Troy Niklas will skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft, the fourth Irish player to announce he is leaving with a year of eligibility left. Michael Bertsch, Notre Dame's director of football media relations, confirmed on Friday the 6-foot-7, 270-pound junior from Fullerton, Calif., has informed coach Brian Kelly of his decision. "I have made the very difficult decision to pursue my childhood dream," Niklas said in a statement. He intends to return to Notre Dame and earn his degree.

Niklas started all 13 games for the Irish and was third on the team in receiving with 32 catches for 498 yards and five touchdowns. Niklas is the fourth Irish player with eligibility left to declare for this year's draft. He joins defensive linemen Louis Nix III and Stephon Tuitt and running back George Atkinson III. Niklas, Tuitt and Atkinson are all leaving after just three years at Notre Dame, which nearly doubles since 1995 the number of Irish players who have left Notre Dame for the NFL after three years in school. - AP Sports
