09/15/2010 - SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: Illinois continues to try to adapt to new defensive coordinator Vic Koenning's schemes, but opponents say the Illini are playing more disciplined and more effectively this year. DEs Clay Nurse and Whitney Mercilus got consistent pressure on the quarterback against Southern Illinois. Mercilus earned a sack and also forced the QB to fumble while on a scramble. ILB Ian Thomas is a sure tackler while several Illini, including SLB Nate Bussey, delivered huge hits the first two weeks. Senior CB Travon Bellamy, who was penciled in as a backup safety shortly before the opener, leads the team with 19 tackles and three tackles for loss.
