Overview

Bailey won the 2010 Lou Groza Award as the nation's top kicker, a remarkable accomplishment for an all-state specialist who had to walk on at Colorado despite 51 of his 61 kickoffs resulting in touchbacks his senior year. He finished his senior year making 68-of-70 extra points and 27-of-31 field goal attempts 11-of-13 from 40 or more yards away.

The walk-on got his chance to show what he could do as a true freshman, making all 20 extra points and two of four field goals when needed in that capacity. In 2008 he showed flashes of his talent by hitting all 65 extra points and connecting on 15 of 19 placements, ten of which were shorter than 30 yards.

He struggled a bit when given more chances to make longer kicks as a junior, making only three of eight kicks from more than 40 yards out (15 of 19 overall, 46 of 46 extra points), so his 2010 success came as a bit of a surprise. However, his leg strength and calm in kicking his lone game-winning opportunity (a 40-yarder against Texas A&M) gives scouts reason to bring him into training camp to compete for a job.

Analysis

Positives: Right-footed kicker with a smooth, consistent approach to the ball. Nice trajectory on most field goal attempts, ball flight is straight and end-over-end. Solid 50- to 52-yard range. Maintains balance during placements to compensate for poor footing.

Negatives: Will occasionally yank a placement left and low -- still going through the uprights. Leans back when going through the ball. Half-step starts his approach on placements. Did not handle kicking duties until bowl game due to regular specialist's academic suspension. Inconsistent during career on longer field goal attempts.
