Overview

Willie enrolled at Cerritos Community College out of high school. He saw immediate action in 2008, recording 37 catches for 346 yards (9.4) and 2 touchdowns. Willie led the team in receiving in 2009 as a sophomore, finishing with 39 catches for 760 yards (19.5) and 2 touchdowns, earning Second Team all-conference honors. He transferred to Arizona State prior to the 2010 season, choosing the Sun Devils over Arizona, Washington and San Diego State. Willie earned a starting job in 2010 as a junior with 9 starts, recording 36 catches for 442 yards (12.3) and 6 touchdowns. He returned as a starter in 2011 as a senior with 12 starts, finishing with 36 catches for 455 yards (12.6) and 3 touchdowns

Willie is an intriguing prospect because he has very good athleticism for his size and plays with strength and coordination ? a lot to love about his blocking ability. He catches everything with his hands and routinely shows above average focus. Willie is a better overall athlete and more consistent catching the ball than former ASU teammate Gerell Robinson, but he doesn?t use his large frame as well and wasn?t nearly as productive, which is a red flag ? could be a diamond-in-the-rough type of prospect and is worth a late-round draft pick.

Analysis

Strengths: A good-sized athlete and big target with very good length ? long arms and large catching radius. Has good functional strength for the position and is a physical, powerful blocker with a strong stiff arm. A smooth athlete with very good balance and body control to adjust and make tough catches look easy. A natural hands-catcher with very good focus and concentration. Much improved route runner, doing a better job staying balanced and not tipping his intended path. Very good competitor and always wants the ball ? flashes an obvious upside.

Weaknesses: Lacks natural burst and isn?t a sudden or quick-twitch athlete ? doesn?t create much separation in man coverage. Has only average speed for the position and isn?t much of a threat after the catch. Doesn?t play up to his size and needs to be more aggressive in jump-ball situations. Has a lot of growing to do and needs to improve upon the little aspects of the position. Attracts too many dumb, pointless penalties and needs to cut down on the mental errors. Had only average production over his two seasons, managing just 36 receptions each of his two seasons in Tempe.

Latest News
10/11/2010 - LOOKING GOOD: The identity of this Arizona State team is that it will compete. And when the Sun Devils play a clean game cutting down on the penalties, turnovers and missed opportunities they figure to be tough to beat. Was the disciplined effort against Washington the beginning of a trend or the exception? Through the first half of the season, Arizona State is 3-3 and knows it has a quarterback Steven Threet it can be comfortable with, while additions to the receiver corps (Mike Willie, Aaron Pflugrad) and at running back (Deantre Lewis) have added spark to the attack.
