04/20/2009 - Former Wisconsin defensive tackle and Ladysmith grad Mike Newkirk is one week away from finding out if his childhood dream of being selected in the NFL Draft will come true. Newkirk, a three-year varsity letterwinner at Wisconsin, was not invited to the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. Instead, Newkirk has gone another route. He worked out for scouts at the Badgers pro day, and has been training with former NFL defensive lineman Chuck Smith at his camp outside Atlanta. Newkirk recently made a visit to the Cincinnati Bengals, and has also been contacted by the San Francisco 49ers. Newkirk says he would love to hear his name called during the draft. If that happens, most scouts say it would likely be on the second day in the late rounds. However, the long-term goal for Newkirk is to make a 53-man roster for the 2009 season. - WEAU 13 NEWS
