Overview

A former quarterback whose development at free safety over the past two seasons helped keep Syracuse's strong tradition of producing defensive backs alive and well. Despite leading the Orangemen with 97 tackles, Fields is still developing as an open-field tackler and overall pass defender. With his size and raw athleticism, Fields makes sense as a late-round developmental prospect.

Analysis

Positives: Smooth, athletic frame with room to add an additional 10-15 pounds of muscle without a significant loss of speed. … Legitimate NFL athleticism. … Rare straight-line speed. … Good foot quickness and balance to cover receivers out of their breaks. … Understands what the receiver is trying to do due to his prior experience as a quarterback. … Improved his tackling as a senior. … Ascending player worthy of development.

Negatives: Still quite raw in terms of his technique as a tackler and in coverage. … Only marginal instincts for the position. … Takes an extra beat to recognize the action and has only marginal burst out of his stance. … Physical enough at the tackle point, but struggles with technique -- sometimes tackling too high and getting dragged for extra yardage, other times dropping his eyes and grasping.
