Overview

Moved up NFL draft boards with a surprising first season as the Seminoles' kicker in 2008. Gano won the Lou Groza Award and garnered first-team all-ACC honors after making 24-of-26 field goal attempts -- including 5-of-7 of 50 yards or longer. Gano actually missed the first two games of his senior season after having surgery in August on a torn right meniscus. He ended the season as the team's triple-threat specialist, re-gaining punting and kickoff duties as the season progressed. Honorable mention all-ACC as a punter in 2007 with a 43.4-yard average overall; he averaged 42.7 yards a boot and placed the ball well after returning from injury. Gano finished a dream season by winning the Champs Sports Bowl MVP award after pinning Wisconsin deep multiple times.

Analysis

Positives: Good height for the position with long legs and good flexibility. … Made three tackles as a senior, showing the ability to keep an angle and force the returner out of bounds. … Is unfazed by kicking from either hash, is very accurate from 50 yards on either side or the center of the field. … Consistently smooth approach and kick through the ball, albeit with a halted follow-through. … Adequate hang-time, 4.4-4.5 seconds, on most 40-yard kicks. … Capable of planting the ball inside the 10 or angling it well to a coffin corner.

Negatives: Wiry frame with muscle definition in the upper and lower body. … Only adequate hip snap. … Leans too far to his left on placements, leading to a horizontal swing plane and a lower kick than what is acceptable in the NFL. … Reaches the end zone on kickoffs but sacrifices the hang-time needed to prevent long returns. … Three-step punter with slow delivery -- 1.35 seconds to get the kick off. … Inconsistent leg extension. … Punts are usually spirals, but they do not turn over to get the added distance. … Inconsistent kicking directionally and will come up short or mis-kick.

Latest News

01/29/2009 - Along with all the Super Bowl festivities in the area, the 11th Annual College All-Star Football Challenge was hosted at the University of Tampa this past Monday. The placekickers took part in both accuracy and distance competitions. West Virginia's Pat McAfee won the accuracy competition, in which kickers had to make field goals from distances of 40-55 yards. Florida State's Graham Gano won the long distance competition, kicking a field goal of 54 yards to win the event. In warm ups Gano was routinely making field goals of 60+ yards. Gano is both a placekicker at FSU as well as a punter, which should greatly raise his NFL draft stock. He also won the Lou Groza award during the regular season, which honors the nation's top placekicker. Pittsburgh's Connor Lee and Utah's Louie Sakoda also took part in these events. - Sam Gerb, The Minaret Online

01/06/2009 - The special teams units for the Senior Bowl have been finalized. Somehow, the top placekicker in the nation didn't make the cut. FSU kicker/punter and former Tate High standout Graham Gano, fresh off a record-setting senior season capped with the Lou Groza Award, became a Senior Bowl snub when the special teams rosters were announced on Monday. Gano made 24 of 26 field goals in 2008 while leading the nation in field goals per game (2.18) and leading all kickers scoring 9.55 points a game. He made a school-record 18 straight field goals, tied for the national lead in field goals made (24) and led the country with five made kicks from at least 50 yards. That resume was enough to earn him an invite to February's NFL Combine in Indianapolis ??? an invite he received on Monday ??? but not enough to get him into the game in Mobile, Ala. "I would have liked to play in it," Gano said. "I was hoping I would get a chance to play in it since my senior year in high school." Considered the top postseason all-star game in terms of NFL prospect evaluation, the only chance Gano has to earn a Senior Bowl spot now would be if an invited special teamer dropped out or suffered an injury. Even then, the Senior Bowl committee would have to choose Gano as the best replacement. - D.C. Reeves, PNJ.com
