07/01/2009 - The jury still is out on the defensive unit. Senior nose tackle Ryan Bain's tough luck with injuries continued again this spring (back injury). The Zips are aching to see the Iowa transfer in action. The defensive staff has said its base will continue to be a 3-3-5 scheme, but expect multiple looks as Akron tries to bring more pressure.

07/01/2009 - Was it scheme, personnel, injuries, or a mix of all three? The Zips need to sort through film and statistics and try to figure out why they struggled so much defensively in 2008? Akron did not generate enough pressure on opposing quarterbacks last fall and had just 11 sacks in 12 games. Consequently, the Zips ranked tenth in the MAC in pass efficiency defense (142.1), yielding 26 scoring passes compared to nine interceptions. Akron also ranked tenth in total defense, yielding 397.6 yards per game. The Zips need senior NT Ryan Bain, the Iowa transfer, to be an impact player. Bain did not play last season because of injury and NCAA sanction. Complicating the defensive evaluation is the need to replace productive linebackers Kevin Grant and Doug Williams.
