There are a lot of things that puzzle me each year as NFL Draft time rolls around.
Whether it's the strange fall or rise of a player, or the constant dumb sayings that analysts throw out or team personnel recite, I have a hard time figuring a lot of it out.

It's my "I can't figure out why" column. For example, I can't figure out why some media and even some team executives keep saying they wouldn't want a high pick because of the price it will cost.
Who cares? If you pick the right guy, you'll gladly pay him. I'd much rather pay a young kid than an aging veteran -- if I have the right guy. That's the key. Get the right guy. Don't blow the pick. You think the Colts are angry they drafted Peyton Manning? They'd do that again every year. And they're happy to pay him.
That's just one of the things I can't figure out. Here are some others:
I can't figure out why ... people always say "it's too high to take him there." If you like a player, draft him. Some may think it's too high, but if you believe in your board and your conviction, draft the player. It's that simple. It's not too high if you believe the player is worth it.
I can't figure out why ... every year we hear it's not a good draft. Again, if you're a good drafting team you can make it a good draft. There are a lot of good players in this draft. Find them.
I can't figure out why ... Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno isn't being talked about more. He's the best back in this draft. I know his 40 times aren't great, but he plays a lot faster. He will be a star.
I can't figure out why ... so many teams are given the indication they are taking receivers. Want to bet there are far more big people taken than skill people?

I can't figure out why ... USC middle linebacker Rey Maualuga gets so much love. He's a two-down linebacker who will come out on third down. And he has a tendency to get heavy. I'd pass.
I can't figure out why ... some scouts think Matthew Stafford is just a strong-armed quarterback. He reads the field. After watching him play on give game tapes, I'm more convinced he's the best player in this draft. In the LSU game last year, he faced two free blitzing linebackers, stood in the pocket, looked left and then right and threw a laser for a big-play score. It was the kind of play that makes scouts drool. It was a "wow" play. He reads the field much better than his reputation.
I can't figure out why ... the Kansas City Chiefs would take Tyson Jackson with the third overall pick. How can they justify using that high a pick on player who most likely would never get 10 sacks as a 3-4 end in their defense? He's good. He's not worth the pick there.
I can't figure out why ... there is talk Alabama tackle Andre Smith will fall out of the top 10. He was a three-year starter in the SEC. That means something. I do think he might be better as a right tackle.
I can't figure out why ... new Browns coach Eric Mangini is trying to clean house. Did we miss something in his first coaching gig that told us he knew what he was doing?

| Percy Harvin: Why do you think they call it dope? (Getty Images) |
I can't figure out why ... teams waste two years of scouting by their scouts, who make a decent living, only to turn their boards upside down with post-football analysis. Hire good people. Believe in them. And trust them.
I can't figure out why ... teams think you can win without a franchise quarterback. That happens once every 10 years or so. And it takes special circumstances. If you don't have a franchise quarterback, get one. Nine of the 12 playoffs quarterbacks from last season were first-round picks. The past four Super Bowl champion QBs were all high first-round picks. Yes, you have Tom Brady and Kurt Warner. But for the most part pedigree holds true at the quarterback position.
I can't figure out why ... team executives get so put off by guys like me grading their drafts and their picks. It's called instant analysis. We all know a draft can't truly be graded for three years. But fans want it now. So we give it to them. That hasn't prevented calls from general managers over the years complaining about their grades on Monday. Lighten up, guys. At least in this economy fans still care about your business.
I can't figure out why ... there are some who make fun of those who live for the draft. Even if I didn't cover the NFL for a living, I'd be a draft junkie. I've been that way my entire life. When the draft was on Tuesdays when I was in college, we'd blow off class, get up in the morning -- that's when it was in Arizona -- and watch the draft. I love it.
