It played out on national TV as choppers followed the white van* that transported the Broncos traveling party (including John Elway, John Fox and general manager Brian Xanders) from the airport to Manning.
*Seriously, a white van? The Broncos couldn't get a stretch limo or something to meet them?
I watched approximately seven seconds of the coverage, and the most newsworthy moment occurred when the van passed a semi on the right side (!). But others did watch it. And tweeted about it. So, I present to you the best (and snarkiest) comments that filtered into my Twitter feed as The Drive (in Elway's case, a literal Drive) played out on national TV (by the way, Mike Tanier from Football Outsiders was hysterical in his play by play).
John Elway was a workin' man, he used to drive that Econoline Van— Michael Tanier (@FO_MTanier) March 16, 2012
Bill Belichick has hacked into the GPS of the Elway van. They are headed to Radiator Springs!— Michael Tanier (@FO_MTanier) March 16, 2012
Is Duke in a different state from the airport? This drive seems to have taken forever. Maybe because we're watching a journalism low point.— Judy Battista (@judybattista) March 16, 2012
Good driver. He doesn't stop in the crosswalks. He stops short of them, unlike the other cars on the street.— John McClain (@McClain_on_NFL) March 16, 2012
@dannyoneil The speed of the van tells us what they think their chances are.Fast means they think he'll sign. Slow means theyre nevrvous— Aaron Roberts (@arob327) March 16, 2012
And the big winner:
Fox: "Will you just stop and ask for directions?" Elway: "I know where I am going!" Tebow: "Am I traded yet?"— Michael Tanier (@FO_MTanier) March 16, 2012
