Dolphins meet with Matt Flynn Saturday, decision could come by weekend

The Dolphins spent most of the first week of free agency in desperate pursuit of Peyton Manning. The affection was unrequited (former Dolphins great Dan Marino reportedly had to set up the initial meeting between the two sides) and on Friday Manning told Miami that he wasn't interested. By then, their other target, former Packers backup Matt Flynn, had flown to Seattle to meet with the Seahawks.

On Saturday, the Dolphins finally got Flynn to South Florida where he met with with team officials and was checked out by the medical staff according to the Palm Beach Post's Ben Volin. By Saturday evening, sources told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Omar Kelly that both sides hoped to finalize a contract that would make Flynn the Dolphins' starter.

“Logic would tell me he would do something this weekend or thereabouts,” Matt Flynn's father, Alvin, told Volin in a phone interview. “He doesn't want to drag this out.”

There were some concerns that Flynn might not leave Seattle without signing a contract but Alvin Flynn said that his son wasn't going to do anything without first meeting with Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin, who was also his offensive coordinator in Green Bay.

“He said [Seattle] was a really nice place, and he enjoyed it, but he wanted to look at both of them. That was the way he felt going in,” Alvin Flynn said.

Flynn has long been considered a natural fit for the Dolphins because he knows Philbin's offense. He"could run that offense in his sleep," Alvin told the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson, but added that his son also "likes Seattle. He likes [Seahawks coach] Pete Carroll. They hit it off well. It's two very good franchises. I don't think he could go wrong" with either team.

The allure of Manning was too much for owner Stephen Ross who was supposedly "infatuated" with the possibility. The feeling wasn't mutual which, in the long run, might be in the organization's best interest.
