With Sean Payton out of a job for 2012 -- well, a football job; he still could do some network work -- ESPN is reporting that Payton has approached Bill Parcells about taking over as the Saints interim coach for next season. According to Fox Sports, the two will meet this week to talk over the possibilities even though Payton still isn't sure if he'll appeal the year-long suspension handed down by Roger Goodell.
If the Parcells hiring were to happen, well, it'd be quite a shock. Previously, we've speculated that the interim job would go to offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael or defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
The last time Parcells coached was 2006 when he went 9-7 with the Cowboys, and he's coming off a reign as a Dolphins executive in which the organization didn't improve.
Parcells was asked by the Associated Press if he'd spoken to anyone with the Saints about the opening and said, "No."
However, Parcells was asked by David Lennon of Newsday about the potential hiring and didn't exactly deny the possibility of taking the job.
"Everything is hypothetical at this point," Parcells said, via Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com.
Parcells did say that he talked to the Payton about the Saints issues "when it first happened" but said "not really" when asked if he'd talked to Payton about the specifics of the open job.
Last April, Parcells was asked if he was retired from the game, and he basically said yes.
“I'm done. I know I've said that before, so you better put it down in pencil,” Parcells said. “My full intention is, I'm going to be 70 years old in August, and I'm enjoying my time now. I really left Miami about October 1 last year, and it is really the first time I've had any extended period of time to myself, and you get to do some things that I enjoy doing.
"I have a place in Saratoga, N.Y. that I like very much. And I'm currently speaking to you from Jupiter, Florida, which I've been here since in the mid-80s, and I love it here. So, it's a good time for me. And fortunately, I'm in good health and feel good. I still have a lot of things that I'd like to try to do, but I think I'm going to leave the NFL somewhere else now.”
Payton currently is at the owners meetings, and the word is he might speak to reporters Tuesday. Maybe he'll set the record straight at that point (I wouldn't bet on it, though).
