Steelers unveil 80th anniversary throwback uniforms

CBSSports.com Rapid Reporter Chuck Finder sums it up nicely when talking about the Steelers' new (old) throwback uniforms unveiled Tuesday to commemorate the franchise's 80th anniversary: "Cripes, it's stripes."

Finder adds that the "black-and-yellow horizontal striped jersey and sock combination (is) modeled after the 1930s then-Pirates uniform, which President Art Rooney II admitted looked 'like a prison uniform.'"

And that observation from Rooney explains this one from the team's website: “We have never used those jerseys since the 1934 season," he said. Of course, Rooney added that he thinks "fans will be excited to see our players wear them in action this year." Sadly, this means that this isn't one of those instances where you take that Cosby sweater you got as a gift to celebrate a special occasion and bury it in the back of the closet. Nope, the Steelers will be donning their version of the Cosby sweater at some point during the 2012 season.

These gems rival what the Denver Broncos perpetrated against the uniform with their 2009 throwbacks replete with swirly socks.

And who knows, maybe both teams can go old school in their Week 1 matchup. Cripes, indeed.
