A few weeks ago, I asked LeGarrette Blount how he'd feel about the Buccaneers drafting Alabama running back Trent Richardson with the fifth-overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
His response stirred up a little noise, as Blount said he "definitely would not be happy with that pick." But Blount's now backing down from his comments, and told Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times that he'd "welcome [Richardson] as a teammate."
"I'd welcome him as a teammate," Blount said. "I've met the guy before. He's not a bad kid, but at the same time, like I said, I'd welcome anything that helps the team get better. I'd welcome anybody as a teammate, it doesn't matter who it is."
Blount's comments at the time weren't directed specifically at Richardson anyway; Blount was just saying that he would be taken aback if the Buccaneers felt the need to draft another running back.
And he sounds like he'd just as soon move on from it.
"Like I said, it was just a comment,'' Blount told Stroud. "There's nothing for anybody to read too deep into. You know, there's not nothing I would want to explain. It was just a comment and I left it at that."
Look, it's fine that Blount doesn't want the team to invest an early pick in another running back. (I'd feel the same way if my bosses suddenly hired another Senior NFL Blogger.)
The problem was that Blount did a poor job of expressing himself. And in the prospect made himself look like less of a team player, instead of using the opportunity to point out what a strong competitor and teammate he is.
