Report: Vontaze Burfict, JayRon Hosley flunk drug tests

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer
This will go as yet another red flag against Burfict.
As the 2012 NFL draft kicks off Thursday evening, players like Ohio State tackle Mike Adams (positive drug test) and Nebraska cornerback Alfonzo Dennard (allegedly punched a cop in the face) have recently made bad choices during the most important time of their careers.

Add two more names to that list.

According to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer, Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict and Virginia Tech cornerback JayRon Hosley have flunked drug tests of their own.

Glazer writes that Hosley wrote a letter to teams apologizing for the transgression. For Burfict, though, this is just another black mark against him that could keep him from getting drafted at all.

The fall of Burfict, who was once considered a player with first-round potential, has been dramatic. We wrote Tuesday that if he goes undrafted, the Arena Football League could be an option for him, and yeah, that's looking more possible by the day.

Recently, Burfict -- who, in part, has blamed his coaches for his mediocre performance on the field last year -- did a radio show in Baltimore where he talked about the decline in his draft hopes.

"The guy I am on the field, I'm not the same guy off the field,” he said. “When I'm off the field, I'm more sitting down, more of a chill guy, don't do too much partying, and when I'm on the field I'm just angrier, don't like to lose, have a passion for the game and love to hit. Me and off the field are just two different things and people have it mixed up. They think I'm the same people off the field and it's totally different …

"I'm truly blessed just to be in the position that I'm in right now. If I don't get drafted then I will have to go back to school, but I love football so much that I won't give up on football. But I will go back to school and finish up my schooling and stuff like that and probably go somewhere else like Arena football or something but hopefully I make it to the NFL.”

CBSSports.com has Hosley listed as the seventh-best cornerback in the draft and No. 57 overall. He's slated to be taken in the second round, though this latest news certainly won't help his draft stock.
