Mike Adams sought out Steelers, talked his way back on their draft board

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer
NEW YORK -- Mike Adams stock plummeted during the 2012 NFL Draft, with a report of a failed drug test at the combine sinking his potential for many teams.

But Pittsburgh took a chance on him in the second round, and they only did it because Adams sought them out for a meeting before the draft. In fact, according to GM Kevin Colbert, via our Steelers Rapid Reporter Chuck Finder, Adams begging Pittsburgh for a meeting, the tackle was completely off the Steelers draft board.

“In Mike's case, he sought us out once he was aware of the situation,” Colbert said. He requested a face-to-face interview [in Pittsburgh]. When Mike came in, we told him he was off our draft board.

But eventually Adams worked his way back on the board, and he did it by selling the Steelers on his ability to make the most out of a second chance

“I knew that I screwed up,” Adams said. “I struck out to meet them and just let them know what happened and show my remorse, and that I'll do anything to be a part of [the team].”

What might be most fascinating about this story is that the Steelers are the only team that Adams called. He was clearly trying to boost his draft stock back up, but he wasn't interested in doing it by ringing up every team.

He was, however, willing to accept certain "stipulations" associated with him joining the Steelers. Colbert wouldn't say what those were, precisely, but it stands to reason that "not smoking weed" is probably one of them.

Adams is a guy who could be an absolute beast if he can avoid the off-field problems that plagued him at Ohio State. If he's sincere about his willingness to change, the Steelers will have found a steal in the draft.

Or, more accurately, a steal will have found them.
