VIDEO: Philip Rivers delivers commencement speech at NC State

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer
Over the weekend, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers made a trip back to his old stomping grounds in Raleigh and did so as a pretty important person: he was the commencement speaker for NC State's graduating class of 2012.

When I heard about this, I thought it was pretty cool (and, disclaimer, I'm an alum of NCSU, if you didn't already know). But I thought it would be interesting to see what an NFL player might offer in a speech. Rivers said one thing that really stood out to me, however, and it's advice I'd pass along to just about anyone.

"What are you passionate about? What fires you up?" Rivers asked the graduating class. "What gets you excited about life? What is your football? Life is too short to go through the motions. Discover your passion and do it to the best of your ability."

It's interesting to see how athletes do in these spots; just like Eli Manning hosting SNL, it's not the typical spot you expect to see a quarterback perform in. Rivers did well, though, and actually provided interesting messages to the class of 2012 without going too heavy on the football analogies.
