New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is one of the most well-respected coaches in any sport, as a result of his 64 percent winning percentage and three Super Bowl titles. And he's apparently the highest paid too, according to Forbes.
Tom Van Riper of Forbes put together a list of the highest-paid coaches in the NFL, and Belichick's at the top, thanks to a $7.5 million annual salary. Eight of the 10 highest-paid coaches in all of sports come from the NFL, and that doesn't even include Sean Payton, who was recently suspended by the NFL for his role in a bounty scandal.
Were it not for Payton's suspension, he would've potentially been second on the list. Instead, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan backdoored the second spot on the Forbes list in a four-way tie with Celtics coach Doc Rivers, Rams coach Jeff Fisher and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll. They all make $7 million a year.
Rounding out the top 10 were Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs ($6 million), Lovie Smith of the Bears ($6 million), Ken Whisenhunt of the Cardinals ($5.75 million), Mike Tomlin of the Steelers ($5.75 million) and Andy Reid of the Eagles ($5.5 million).
Van Riper acknowledges that he doesn't have an exact figure on Belichick but said that "no pundit we spoke to doubted [Belichick's salary] was north of $7 million." This is the second-straight year that Belichick topped the list, which is thanks to Phil Jackson remaining (for now) retired.
