Suggs says basketball wasn't cause of injury; he plans to play in 2012

Terrell Suggs recently came out and said that he is "off crutches" and "beasting" following a "partial tear" of his Achilles this offseason.

And he was feeling well enough to appear on ESPN's First Take on Thursday and address the recent report that he suffered his injury playing basketball.

"Absolutely not," Terrell Suggs said. "That's not what happened. Absolutely not. I'm a lot of things. A father. I'm a bad guy, whatever. One thing I'm not is a liar. I was running -- conditioning test."

Interestingly, those reports about Suggs playing basketball actually came from another ESPN personality, so it's odd that First Take gave him a forum to refute it. (Or maybe he's on so much pain medication that he wandered into the wrong studio; that would certainly explain how he managed to sit through the show.) But he's sticking by his guns: it didn't happen while playing basketball.

More important was Suggs' guarantee that he would play in 2012. He wouldn't pinpoint a specific game but said he "is going to be playing in 2012."

"I feel great," Suggs said. "I'm very optimistic. I'm not going to [say something like] I'll be ready by this point or that point or play in this game. I'm not going to say that. I will tell you I'm going to be playing in 2012. Absolutely."

Suggs playing in 2012 would be huge for the Ravens, obviously. But a lot depends on when Suggs returns and how healthy he is. If the Ravens' defense can play at a reasonably high rate (and they should be able to), it would behoove the team to let Suggs take his time and recover from his injury. However it happened.
