Drew Brees: 'I'd never sit out the season'

Drew Brees took to the airwaves all over the place Tuesday morning to talk about a number of issues, including how Saints coaches aren't discussing the bounty program punishments for fear of repercussions from the league and how he and his franchise are getting closer to reaching a new long-term deal.

As you know, Brees hasn't signed his franchise tag and has until July 16 to negotiate a contract extension with the Saints that probably will make him the highest-paid player in NFL history.

Failing that, Brees either will play for the franchise tag of $16.4 million, or he'll sit out the season. But according to Brees on ESPN's Outside the Lines, you can forget about that second part. Because it's not going to happen.

“I'd never sit out the season,” Brees said. “I love the game too much.”

Hey, so that's great news for a Saints fanbase in desperate need of a smile. And though you might think Brees is giving up leverage in contract negotiations by making that claim, it'd be nearly impossible to imagine Brees ever walking away from his astronomical tag figure. He might not be happy about having to sign it, and he might want to leave New Orleans after the 2012 season if he does. But it's not like he wasn't going to play.

Which today Brees has confirmed officially.
