Report: Bud Adams was willing to give Peyton Manning $25M a year

Titans owner Bud Adams put the full-court press on free-agent quarterback Peyton Manning this offseason. His press was so intense that, according to a report, he was willing to pay Manning $25 million a year to play for Tennessee.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reported the stunning number, which is nearly $6 million more than Peyton took to play for the Denver Broncos in 2012.

First up: Bud Adams is a bold man. He's not afraid to come out guns-a-blazing. Peyton is pretty much a holy figure in Tennessee and he would've gotten a good return on his investment.

But the timing of the report is a little auspicious. As Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith notes, Mort essentially reported at the same time that Drew Brees has no intention of showing up for training camp.

And it sure does sound like an ideal news item to release in conjunction with Brees potential holdout, considering the Saints want to make Brees the highest-paid player in the NFL at just over $19 million.

Brees and his agent Tom Condon (who also represents Manning), however, would probably like to get closer to the $25 million. Or, at the very least, they'd like to get over the $20 million mark.

That becomes substantially easier to do when the common belief becomes that Peyton was reportedly offered $25 million to play football in Tennessee.
