Dez Bryant, mother release statement: No family violence occurred

Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant's been the subject of much chatter, thanks to a recent off-feld incident that resulted in his arrest. That arrest drew particular attention when reports emerged that Bryant had shoved his mother (after an altercation with his brother-in-law) and when a 911 call indicated that Bryant's mother feared for her life.

On Monday, it was reported that Bryant's mother, Angela Bryant, wouldn't press charges. And on Tuesday, Dez and Angela confirmed that by releasing a lengthy statement through their attorney Royce West.

“Mr. Bryant and his mother, Angela are appearing here today because they feel it is important to address recent reports that Mr. Bryant committed family violence against his mother," West said in a statement. "Although Dez would like to speak to this matter, on the advice of counsel, he will not make any statements at this time.

"Did a family disagreement occur? Yes. Did Dez Bryant commit family violence against his mother? No."

Bryant had tweeted on Monday night that the "truth" would emerge on Tuesday.

The Bryants appeared in front of the media, without speaking, and acknowledged through the statement that they "have disagreements," that they "understand the serious nature of family violence" and that they believe Dez will "be cleared of any allegations of family violence."

"Angela Bryant does not want charges filed against her son," West said in the statement. "Ms. Bryant has had an opportunity to speak with other people who witnessed the incident and has filed an Affidavit of Non Prosecution with the DeSoto Police Department. She recognizes that under the law, filing of the affidavit may not impact the legal outcome of her complaint.

"She asks that her affidavit be taken into consideration in deciding whether it is in the best interest of her family for this to continue in the legal system or allow them to resolve the issue as a family."

West also said that that the family believes any incident "can be worked out through counseling" and asked the public not to "rush to judgment concerning their family."

It's probably too late for that -- because of the way the incident (reportedly) unfolded, there's already plenty of concern about the way that things went down. That's what happens when there's an alleged incident between a mother and a son, especially if that son is a professional athlete.

The reality of the Bryant situation is that barring any actual conviction -- which will be tough to land without actual charges -- the wideout isn't really likely to end up in any actual trouble. The team needs him, particularly if they believe their "window is closing," and Bryant's only been arrested once, even if his name's been in the press several times for reasons he'd rather not have happen.
