Jets G Matt Slauson takes paycut, wins starting job anyway

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer
Slauson will make about $250,000 less this season than he originally expected. (US Presswire)

Matt Slauson's reward for winning the starting left guard spot over Vlad Ducasse? The Jets gave him a pay cut.

If that seems harsh, well, yeah. It does seem rather unfair.

As the Newark Star Ledger reports, Slauson was supposed to make $1.308 million in the final year of his rookie deal. But Aug. 1, he renegotiated his deal, dropping to a $1.05 million fully guaranteed salary. It's a difference of $250,000. In his original contract, the 2009 sixth-round pick had been scheduled to earn $565,000 but because of escalators that he earned in 2010, his base salary rose to the $1.308 million figure.

Not anymore.

But hey, at least Slauson -- who underwent major shoulder surgery in the offseason -- was named the starter on Wednesday, right?

"I think right now, we'll go with Matt," coach Rex Ryan said. “…He has looked really good to me."

While Slauson might have felt forced to accept the new figure, assuming that the Jets would have released him if he refused to renegotiate, you have to remember that Ducasse has been awfully unimpressive whenever he's had to play in a game. Ryan said Ducasse has looked good in camp so far and that he could be rotated between left guard and right guard.

But still. If past performances are any indication, substituting Ducasse for Slauson could have created a problem for the Jets offense that not even Tim Tebow and his mystical powers could have solved.
