Many players and coaches have had negative things to say about the work done by the NFL's replacement refs. That's understandable given some of their mistakes. But not everyone's passionate about getting the replacements off the field, and that group includes Patriots quarterback Tom Brady who is indifferent.
"Whoever's out there is out there," Brady said. "I really couldn't care less who's calling the game. I gotta go out there and do my job as best I can."
This is, honestly, the smart attitude to take when it comes to the refs. But before we get to why, it's worth noting that Wilson and I broke down the referee situation on Tuesday's podcast.
Yes, the refs have made some stupid mistakes so far. But if there weren't a replacement situation, people would still be complaining about the bad job done by the zebras. It just wouldn't be this bizarre demand to bring back Jeff Triplett and Co.
And if you're Brady, and you know that there's a chance the replacement refs end up working the first three weeks of the regular season, why would you even think about ripping them on the radio?
The refs -- replacements or no -- are the ones in charge of calling holding calls on his offensive linemen, calling pass interference on the defensive backs he's up against and making sure that defenders don't get too aggressive with the quarterback. There's really no logic in him taking an unnecessary shot at them, particularly when Brady himself can do nothing to change the labor impasse between the NFL and the Referees Association.
