Rams sign former first-round bust Vernon Gholston

Though he was drafted by the Jets in the No. 6 spot during the 2008 draft, Vernon Gholston wasn't what you would call a standout performer in New York. In fact, he didn't record a single sack in the three seasons he played with the Jets.

Not surprisingly, Gholston was released before last year's lockout, and laughably, Gholston later claimed that coach Rex Ryan didn't give him enough of a chance during his time in New York -- this even though Gholston couldn't unlock a $9 million escalator by forcing one fumble or recovering one fumble or recording one sack.

Basically -- and this is putting it nicely -- Gholston was a humongous bust.

After the Bears cut him before last season began, Gholston has found a third chance, as the Ramsannounced they have signed Gholston to a deal.

For the record, here's what Gholston has accomplished in three NFL seasons: 45 games, 42 tackles, and 0 across the rest of the board.

As ESPN's Mike Sando optimistically points out, it's possible the Rams could use Gholston in some kind of defensive end situational role if he makes the team. But if his past career is any indication, probably not. Until then, here are some jokes.
