Jeffrey Lurie makes it clear another 8-8 Eagles season is 'unacceptable'

Another 8-8 season could have Reid in hot water with Lurie. (US Presswire)

2011 was a trainwreck for the Eagles. The four wins to close out the season were nice and gave Philly some promise for 2012, but were largely irrelevant.

Or, if you prefer to use the term that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie used after the season, you can call them "fool's gold." On Thursday, Lurie reiterated that what happened last year was unacceptable and said -- without actually saying -- that 8-8 in 2012 would probably get Andy Reid fired.

"You know, my expectations, I've said it before and I said it after last season [that] I expect a substantially improved team," Lurie said. "We all thought we were better than 8-8 but we weren't because your record tells you what you were."

Asked directly if there was something that could mitigate an 8-8 season (injuries, etc), Lurie refused to put a direct set of expectations on the season, before basically doing just that.

"Again, I am not going to make blanket statements," Lurie said. "I really wanted to try to explain to you that 8-8 was unacceptable. Yeah, I guess if two thirds of the team is not playing [then] there are always exceptions. That was a really unacceptable outcome. I just want to reiterate that."

It warrants mentioning that Reid himself probably wasn't thrilled with the season either, you know? It gets lost in the uber-hype of the 2011 Eagles team and the glaring lack of a Super Bowl on his resume, but Reid has been ridiculous in Philadelphia. He's never won eight or less games in a season twice in a row and only five of his 13 seasons have ended with less than double-digit wins.

That's truly remarkable in today's NFL, and you can almost certainly guarantee that Reid has high expectations for himself this season and doesn't likely foresee another eight-win year. But that doesn't mean that another one won't land him in seriously hot water with his boss.
