Way back in April 2011, we mentioned that former Giants star Michael Strahan could be in line to replace Regis Philbin on the morning show Philbin had co-hosted with Kelly Ripa. On Tuesday morning, that announcement came to fruition when Ripa announced that Strahan would be her new co-host on “Live!”
Since Philbin left the show, Ripa has had 59 temporary co-hosts, according to the AP, and Strahan has made several appearances.
He was a finalist for Philbin's old job, and apparently, he beat out "Saturday Night Live's" Seth Meyers for the seat next to Ripa.
"They didn't replace Regis,” Bill Carroll, a syndication analyst for Katz Television Group, told USA Today last month when it was expected that Strahan would get the job. “They found Kelly a new co-host, someone who could start anew with her and establish the next generation with the show. They certainly have a nice rapport together. They tease each other and they seem to have a comfort level. … More than ratings, they were looking at chemistry, and ultimately, that's [how] they made the decision."
Here's hoping that Strahan -- who will stay in his analyst role on "Fox NFL Sunday" -- lasts longer on this show than his last go-around on non-NFL TV.
