NFL makes Week 2 assignments for replacement refs

According to Jay Glazer on "Fox NFL Sunday," the NFL has assigned its replacement officials to Week 2 games, meaning the league and the NFL Referees Association seemingly are no closer to striking a deal to end the officials' lockout. CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman has confirmed Glazer's report and says the “sides are still very far apart.”

Even better: This kind of news is something we can expect each week until the labor dispute is resolved.

As CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora writes, "The NFL intends to to stay two weeks ahead with these assignments, [a] source said."

While much was made during the offseason about the competency of the replacements -- and in the preseason, they were, much of the time, brutally bad -- they had a decent enough night in Wednesday's season-opener between the Giants and Cowboys.

As Freeman noted, “Were the replacements as horrid as everyone expected? Actually, no. Any fair-minded person would say this. The replacements made mistakes but they weren't horrible. They were just fine. They were actually more than fine. They were sloppy at times, like when one gave the wrong sign for delay of game. They missed obvious calls but they also got a bunch right. In fact, they got most of them right.”

But before the NFL can relax, there are 13 games on Sunday and two on Monday during which every amateur watching in the stadium or on TV can weigh in on the job of those replacements. And the players will be testing the limits as well.

"We're going to try and take advantage of the fact they're on national television and probably scared s---less," one Giants player told Freeman before the game. "Every player and every staff will do the same as the games go on. We're going to try and intimidate them. Again, every team will try it."

Looks like they'll get to try that intimidation in Week 2 as well.
