Texans sign QB Matt Schaub to 4-year, $62 million extension

A few weeks ago, the Texans didn't have much hope they would get a deal done for quarterback Matt Schaub. But the team announced after Sunday's win over the Dolphins that Schaub has in fact agreed to terms on a contract extension that CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora reports is for four years and worth $62 million (with $25 million in guarantees).

The Texans had also been trying to secure linebacker Connor Barwin to a long-term deal but the sides were unable to come to terms. The organization has a policy of not negotiating during the season.

Schaub was the Falcons' 2004 third-round pick out of Virginia. He served as Michael Vick's backup for three years before the Texans traded for him prior to the 2007 season. Schaub started 64 games the past five seasons, completing 65 percent of his throws for 16,903 yards, 92 TDs and 52 INTs. He suffered a foot injury in Week 10 last season and had to watch from the sidelines as the Texans won the division and their first-ever playoff game with rookie T.J. Yates.

Clearly, Houston felt comfortable enough with Schaub's progress to reward him with an extension.

Against the Dolphins, Schaub was 20-of-31 for 266 yards and a touchdown. (Eight of those passes and 119 of those yards -- and, yes, the one score -- went to Andre Johnson).
