Raiders WR Jacoby Ford to have foot surgery, will be out 'significant amount of time'

Raiders third-year wide receiver Jacoby Ford sprained his left foot during an Aug. 17 preseason game against the Cardinals and he's been sidelined ever since. He didn't play in the team's season-opening loss to the Chargers and now it appears he could be out of commission for a while: coach Dennis Allen said Tuesday that Ford will undergo surgery.

"Basically, it's the same injury he had last year," Allen said via "He re-injured it this season ... After visiting with the foot specialist in Carolina, everybody thought that given a little bit of time he could come back from it.

"After giving it some time and re-evaluating, the medical people felt like this was probably the best thing for him. It didn't respond like everybody was kinda hoping it would ... he will be out a significant amount of time."

In late August, after the Dolphins had parted ways with Chad Johnson and there was speculation that he might resurface in Oakland, Raiders' quarterback Carson Palmer spoke glowingly of his former teammate before offering this qualification.

"(Chad would) be a great add for any team but we've got young guys that are just coming along. I mean Denarius (Moore) will be back any day. Jacoby (Ford's) deal is not that bad. So we're not going to give up on any of those guys. They're too good of players and young."

Neither Moore nor Ford played against the Chargers.

In two seasons, Ford averaged 17.0 yards per reception. The Raiders' offense was inconsistent Monday night. Running back Darren McFadden was the team's leading receiver with 13 receptions for 86 yards, followed by tight end Brandon Myers (5 catches, 65 yards) and recent free-agent acquisition Derek Hagan (4, 44).

Oakland travels to Miami to face the Dolphins on Sunday.
