Trent Richardson responds to Rey Maualuga, says 'talk mess ... you'll see Sunday'

For reasons that remain a mystery, people seem to take pleasure in calling out Browns rookie running back Trent Richardson. It started this summer when Hall of Famer and Browns legend Jim Brown offered up this evaluation of Cleveland's 2012 first-round pick: "I'm not trying to be mean. There are certain people you look at and there's something special about them. I don't see it.”

Thanks for not being mean, Jim.

To his credit, Richardson said he'd use Brown's words as motivation. That motivation appeared to manifest itself upside the head of Eagles safety Kurt Coleman, who'd willingly concede that Richardson isn't your run-of-the-mill back as soon as he comes to.

On Sunday, the Browns face the Bengals and Cincinnati linebacker Rey Maualuga has gotten into the act.

Dear Rey, watch this. Thanks in advance.

"He can run you over and you can miss a tackle, at the same time, from what we've seen he didn't do anything spectacular," Maualuga told CBSSports.com's Marty Gitlin. "From running screens, missing passes, trying to find a hole when he's running the ball. He just didn't do anything spectacular from what I've seen."

Uh huh.

We appreciate Maualuga's honesty but nothing good can come of this. Richardson, no doubt taking time out from blowing the heads off tackling dummies, admitted to making a mental note of Maualuga's scouting report.

"Most definitely,'' Richardson told the Cleveland Plain Dealer Thursday. "When somebody wants to talk mess, I mean, hey, that's them. I let my game speak for itself, so if they want to see how mad I am, or how upset they got me about the comment, you'll see Sunday.''

Thank God somebody asked Richardson if he'd consider giving Maualuga the Kurt Coleman treatment.

"I might,'' he said smiling. "You never know. You never know what can happen out there on that field.''
