Joe Flacco's attitude toward Ravens negotiations has 'hardened'

After Joe Flacco's dominating performance last week against the Bengals, Ravens coach John Harbaugh was asked about the failed contract negotiations between the team and his franchise quarterback.

Pay him whatever he asks for,” Harbaugh said. “Pay the man.”

Reportedly, that's not going to happen quite yet.

CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora has previously reported that talks between the two sides broke down last month after they were on the verge of a new deal and that Flacco is content to play out his deal though the Ravens really want to keep him. CBSSports.com's Mike Freeman also spoke this week to someone close to Flacco, and the quarterback's attitude toward the Ravens has hardened.

On Sunday morning, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that if the negotiations were to resume, the sides would have to start over.

But even if the sides can't come to an agreement before Flacco's contract expires at the end of this season, don't expect him to play anywhere other than Baltimore. As La Canfora has written, if the Ravens can't strike a deal, they're likely to place the franchise tag on him in 2013 -- and 2014, if necessary.

“One phone call might be enough to get it done, but then again, the tenor of the season and how well he plays will also dictate his price,” La Canfora wrote last Sunday. “Things have a way of fluctuating once the games begin.”

And they did last week -- seemingly in Flacco's favor.
