If you're going to fine an NFL player for wearing the wrong kind of socks or for wanting to match his shoes with his jersey or for wearing candy on his feet, it obviously makes sense to fine players for what they wear after games.

Which is what the NFL was going to do to 49ers quarterback Alex Smith when he participated in his postgame presser following Sunday's game while wearing a San Francisco Giants hat. (Thankfully, the 49ers P.R. staff provided fainting couches for those scribes who were shocked by Smith's after-hours wear.)

According to the San Jose Mercury News, the NFL originally levied a $15,000 fine at Smith for wearing nonsponsored gear within 90 minutes after the end of a game (players also can't wear nonsponsored gear 90 minutes before a game). Then, the league rescinded the fine and gave Smith a warning.

“It's weird,” Smith said. “I could wear a Polo shirt after the game, and they're not going to fine me.”

Instead, the next time Smith violates the rule, he'll be fined $15,000.
