NFL team executive: Jets losing Revis is 'significant blow,' reserves are 'special teams guys'

No need to worry, Jets fans. With Revis injured, Cromartie has announced that he's now the NFL's best CB. (US Presswire)

Jets coach Rex Ryan won't officially end cornerback Darrelle Revis' season for at least another week, not until the perennial Pro Bowler has surgery to repair the torn ACL that he suffered last week against the Dolphins.

"Let's see what happens when he goes through surgery," Ryan said earlier this week. “Because if there's that 0.0002% chance that he can play in the Super Bowl, why would you take the option away from him?”

We can think of a few reasons. Then again, Revis is the Jets' best player and, without him, what many people figured for an 8-8 team suddenly becomes much less than that. A personnel executive for a rival team was asked by's Albert Breer this week if losing Revis is akin to losing a franchise quarterback.

"For that D? Yeah," the executive said. "This is a significant blow anyway, but even worse because it's a possible scheme changer. Their pressure scheme is directly tied to their ability to play lockdown, one-on-one coverage, and also to their depth to do it. Their reserves beyond [Kyle] Wilson are special teams guys. ... [Revis'] skills are such a commodity because they're not a commonality. He's certainly the best corner in football."

Luckily, Antonio Cromartie, the guy who plays opposite Revis, has proclaimed that he's now the league's best cornerback.

“I have said that I'm the second-best corner in the NFL,” Cromartie told the New York Daily News. “I'm not backing off what I said. I don't care what anyone else believe … I know what I'm capable of when I'm at the top of my game.”

Ryan's response when apprised of Cromartie's sentiments: "Now he's got to go out and prove it … but I absolutely love it."

Well, Cromartie and his teammates will get that chance Sunday when they host the 49ers.
