Report: Jets owner Woody Johnson could 'push' football people to start Tim Tebow

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

You'd think the Jets couldn't be any more of a circus than they already are. You could be wrong, depending on whether Woody Johnson gets his (reported) way with respect to the quarterback situation.

See, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York, Johnson could "push" Rex Ryan and Mike Tannenbaum to give Tim Tebow a start. This despite Rex giving Mark Sanchez the dreaded voted of confidence this week.

"Two people who know Johnson, and know how he runs his football operation, believe he will push his football people to start Tebow," Cimini wrote Tuesday.

It's no secret that Johnson loves Tebow and thinks that the left-handed fullback is good for business. He made as much clear at the Republican National Convention this year.

"I think you can never have too much Tebow," Johnson, a delegate for Republican nominee Mitt Romney, said.

It's also not a huge secret that Johnson isn't above meddling with football operations; he pushed the team to land Brett Favre before the 2008 season.

And as much as I don't think there's a chance in hell that Tebow can turn the Jets around, neither can Mark Sanchez. With a season-ending injury to Darrelle Revis and a potentially season-ending injury to Santonio Holmes, there's not much reason to believe the Jets can survive and/or remain interesting.

However, putting Tebow on the field would keep people watching for a few weeks if only to see if he could pull off the same miracle that he worked in Denver last season. (Benching Mark Sanchez after he finishes playing the 49ers and Texans in consecutive weeks is just cold though.) And if Tebow can get the team rolling, well, may God have mercy on all our souls.

Given that fact, if Sanchez keeps struggling under center for the Jets, don't be shocked if Johnson gives Ryan and Tannenbaum a friendly little nudge in the wrong direction.
