Jerry Jones has impeccable timing. Following the Cowboys' inexplicable late-game clock-management issues in a loss to the Ravens, the Dallas owner and general manager decided now was as good a time as any to point out the Cowboys can the Super Bowl this year.
"We've got to have some wins to make sure we're in the hunt," Jones said during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan (via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram). "But we are fresh off, I keep pointing it out, a world champion that won nine of 16 ballgames last year. We know that you want your team as healthy and as in sync as it can be as we get on in to the end of the season. We know that we've played one division game and won it. We've got those guys, the Giants, coming back in here. We know that's going to be a big game for us.
"All of those things give us a chance to take a team that is evolving into -- if you look at the pluses against the Ravens -- evolving into a team that can be a team that can compete for the championship. Not next year, this year."
Yep. And if the Chiefs go 10-0, they'll probably win the AFC West and general manager Scott Pioli will be vindicated. While we like Dallas' chances slightly more than Kansas City's, the takeaway's the same: we can hypothesize all we want about what we'd like to happen, but there's usually a huge chasm between reality and make-believe.
Maybe that's why coach Jason Garrett wants nothing to do with Jones' comments.
“We are not focused on that,” Garrett said at his Wednesday press conference according to the Star-Telegram's Clarence Hill. “We are focused on meeting Wednesday and preparing for Carolina on Sunday. That is where our emphasis is a players and coaches.”
Hopefully, Garrett is also focused on the rudimentary clock-management skills necessary to win football games.
The coach was also asked if Jones' remarks put too much pressure on the 2-3 Cowboys.
“We are not focused on that," Garrett said. "We think Jerry Jones is an outstanding owner. We appreciate everything he does for our football team. But our focus is practicing well today.”
And clock management.
If nothing else, the Week 8 Giants-Cowboys get-together will give Jones the opportunity to make good on a preseason promise to fans. Namely: his suggestion that "Y'all should come to that [Cowboys] stadium and watch us beat the Giants' ass."
Next stop: Super Bowl! (But we're not focused on that right now.)
