Paul Ryan visits Browns, confuses Colt McCoy with Brandon Weeden

Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan, the Republican vice-presidential candidate, was in the Cleveland area Wednesday campaigning. Perfectly logical since there's an election in three weeks and Ohio is a battleground state.

The schedule included a stop in Berea at the Browns' facility where, according to the pool report (via the Cleveland Plain Dealer), Ryan addressed the team and praised 29-year-old rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden, whom the congressman said he watched play at Oklahoma State.

Oh, one more thing: As Ryan extolled Weeden's awesomeness, he was pointing at backup quarterback Colt McCoy.

To be fair, all redheads look alike. (We don't really believe this. Although, as Dan Patrick noted on NBC's Sunday night pregame show, Weeden does bear a striking resemblance to Ron Weasley.)

It's slightly less embarrassing than proclaiming the Packers' home stadium "Lambert Field" or the Red Sox's best player "Manny Ortez" but it doesn't do much for the perception that politicians, in general, are phonies at worst and out of touch at best.

Either way, Ryan, according to the report, "pleaded for mercy when he realized his mistake." Then he made up an excuse: "You always had your helmet on," he said to Weeden.

This isn't Ryan's first awkward football-related run-in. In May 2011, the congressman gave a speech at the Economic Club of Chicago where he opened with this:

"I want to thank you all for inviting me to speak. It was especially gracious of you to host me, even though I'm a Packers fan and I assume most of you are Bears fans. But that doesn't mean we can't work together. As chairman of the House Budget Committee, I stand ready to do whatever it takes to help you re-sign Jay Cutler.”

Cutler might encourage Ryan to take some advice from Aaron Rodgers regarding critics.
